Let the Summer Begin!

Dear Sixth Grade Students,

Welcome to 6th grade -- officially! This summer at Oak Hill School, we want you to read the books and stories you love!  You may read any books or e-books of your choice: mystery, fantasy, sports, science, history – whatever authors or genres you love to read. Go for it!

The assignment?  6th grade students will read a minimum of 1,000 minutes this summer and complete 6 blog posts.  Blog posts need to restate the question and be detailed and thoughtful. You may also respond to someone else's blog posts as long as it is also detailed and thoughtful. It sounds like a challenge, but 1,000 minutes averages out to around 15 minutes a day.  You can do it! This summer, read for fun!

To recap, you must:
-read 1,000 minutes
-complete a reading log with parent signatures (This can be estimated and 4-5 books or 2 very long books will be sufficient.)
-blog 6 times

To help you with book choices, last year's students made book trailers of their favorite books. I will post the book trailers throughout the summer to help you choose interesting books.

If you are looking for a book to read, here are a few book trailers of books recommended by last year's students. As a note: students will recommend a wide variety of books -- different genres, reading levels, and maturity levels. I encourage you and your family to use Common Sense Media and other book reviews to see if the book is appropriate for you. There are many, many options!

First blog response: Describe yourself as a reader. Be honest. You can write about what you like, don't like, and books you like to read. I have written my response in the comment section as an example.

Don't forget to edit your blog response and to answer the question in great detail explaining your answer.

Enjoy the book trailers and reading!

  1. My friends and family would describe me as a reader. In fact my family jokes that a bookstore is like a toy store to me. It's true; I love wandering through a book store and picking out books to read. While I have always loved a great story, learning to read was not easy or natural to me. In my early years of school, I always felt slightly behind some of my peers and reading felt competitive versus fun. However I began to find some books that I loved and I became entranced with stories like the Babysitters Club series in 2nd grade and Matilda in 3rd grade. From that point on, I was hooked, and I began to really consider myself a reader as a 5th grader when I had a teacher who loved literature and in turn made me love it too. Now as an adult, I cannot wait for the times where I can sit down with a good book and lose myself in a story for hours. I have learned so much about the world -- history and different cultures -- because I read. My mind has been opened, and I have become a more empathetic person because of the stories I have read. This is who I am as a reader.

  2. In my opinion, I would describe myself as a reader. Since kindergarten I was interested in easy read fiction books, like “Spot goes to the library”. In third grade I had a tough time reading aloud to my teacher. I was nervous that my grade would go down, as well as my reading level. I then put down the books I was reading, and found a better book that was just right for me. As I grew, my books got thicker, and filled with more information. I then found myself always on the couch curled up with nice fictional book. On weekend mornings, I always stay in bed reading, my mom wondering where I am. In fourth grade my life changed as a reader because I now could read any book in the classroom. I became very interested in the Harry Potter series, and Roald Dahl. By reading, my thinking deepens, I grow more mature, and my personality shines bright. This is me as a reader.

  3. I would describe myself as a reader as inquisitive, interested, and always looking for a challenge. I am inquisitive because, as I am reading, I can always think of questions about anything in the book I am reading. I am interested because I can so very easily get lost in a book.
For example, in third grade, I started reading a lot more than I had ever before. Whenever I would find a good book, I just could not put it down. I would frequently finish my work early, so I would start reading. Then, I would become absolutely entranced by the book, and suddenly I was lost to the outside world. My teacher would call us to line up to go somewhere, but I was always so lost in my book that I could not hear her! One of my classmates always had to come over and shake me out of my trance. I am always looking for a challenge because, in second grade, whenever we read a book, we had to take a 10-question quiz on the computer about our books. I would always go to the library and get a seventh grade level book, just to see how far I could push my comprehension limits. I remember that once I got a 9/10 on one of these quizzes on a seventh grade book, and I was so proud of myself. For these reasons, I would describe myself as a reader as inquisitive, interested, and always looking for a challenge.

  4. I’ve always been known as the reader in my family. I love almost all genres of books, but my favorites are those with adventure. Growing up, I wasn’t as interested in books as I am now. I am EXTREMELY squirmy, so it has always been a challenge for me to snuggle up with a good book. When I found one, I would quickly lose interest and find other things to do that kept my mind off of reading. Although it doesn’t sound much like me, I always had trouble speaking in front of people between the grades 1 - 4. I would always refuse to talk in front of my class, or even answer a question, because I was afraid of what others would think. Towards the end of fourth grade, I started reading more and more, and reading sort of became my go-to in tough situations. I actually still remember my first time at the public library. I was four years old when my mother took me. I spent three hours reading on a rocking chair!
Some of my favorite childhood books were the “Nancy Drew” series by Carolyn Keene, (a classic) and “The Boxcar Children” books by Gertrude Chandler Warner. After I read those series, I didn’t focus as much on mystery. I slowly moved my way up to “Harry Potter”, by J.K. Rowling, and “The Elite” by Kiera Cass. As I got older, I started finding more interesting genres. To this day, I still don’t know where I exactly fit on the genre scale. Although it still takes me a good amount of time to find the right book, once I do, no can keep me from reading it. I suddenly get absorbed by the characters and the setting. I recently found an exciting series, and I took it with me to graduation because I couldn’t keep my hands off of it! I honestly don’t know where I would be without reading.

  5. I think that all of my friends and family would describe me as a reader. First grade was really when I started to really enjoy cracking open a great book and reading for long periods of time. My first official chapter books that I started to read in 1st grade were called the "Magic Fairy" Books. I think that that series got me into my favorite genre... FANTASY! I am a big fan of a lot of other genres such as historical fiction, realistic fiction, fiction, and nonfiction. My favorite nonfiction books are the "National Geographic" books. I love those books because you get to learn about really cool stories that are not only interesting... they are true. Some examples of some of my all-time favorite books are "The Boxcar Children" books by Gertrude Chandler Warner, the "Ramona S. Quimby" books by Beverly Cleary, the "Sisters Grimm" books by Michael Buckley, and finally "The Land of Stories" books by Chris Colfer. I could name many more books that I LOVE but this would end up being pretty long.
My favorite thing I love about books is that when you truly love the book and become completely absorbed in it then you feel like you have become the characters and are apart of there life. One thing that I extremely CAN NOT do as a reader is read multiple books at once. I tried once and it did not turn out well. The two books were "Mr. Popper's Penguins" and one of the books in the "Nancy Drew" series. They are two absolutely different books with almost nothing in common but, I still managed to mix them up. I now have learned from that mistake and now I try NOT to read two books at once. Other than Disney World, the library is my most favorite place to be. When I am at the library I feel as if anything is possible because I have the freedom of picking from hundreds of books that all will lead me into a different story! This who I am as a reader.

    1. I understand your point of view. I, like you, CANNOT read two books at once! I also love the library. What public library do you go to? I wish I loved as many genres as you did, but I'm a big fan on adventure and realistic fiction. I remember when the "Magic Fairy" books were very popular in first grade, and everyone wanted to read them! Your paragraph gives me great information on the insights of who you really are as a reader.

  6. I would describe myself as a picky reader. The books I don't like are the ones that are not interesting from the start. If a book takes a while to get interesting than I am not very engaged. I want to look forward to continuing my book. I don't want to think of reading as homework. Instead, I want to think of it as a fun thing to do. The books that are very interesting from the start make me want to keep reading. Those are the kind of books that I will get lost in. When I am looking around in the library or bookstore, I make sure that my book is interesting from start to finish. I mostly like to read books that are about sports. I like sports books because I play a lot of sports and they are action packed. I just finished a book called summer ball. This book is about a small kid who is very good at basketball. I really enjoyed this book because I love to play basketball. This helped me because I understood some things in the book that other people may not have understood. When picking out a book, I make sure that this is the right book for me.

  7. I would describe myself as a inconsistant reader. What I mean by that is I can be an easily entertained reader, or an easily bored reader. In all the grades before fifth grade, I couldn't find anything I wanted to read. For example, when I was in Fourth Grade I read a book called Hatchet. I was so bored, because there was very little dialogue, and there was only one character throughout the main part of the story. But when I got into Fifth Grade, and started reading Harry Potter, things changed. I was engaged and I felt like I had found the perfect book. It had mystery and adventure. Some of the time I felt like I was rooting for Harry Potter to win a Quidditch match. So, for the Fifth Grade book assignments I started to look at books with complete interest. I felt happy, scared, confused, and excited. I now know that is what books are for, emotions. I now think of myself as a pretty good reader and I am very excited to read new books both in the summer, and Sixth Grade.

  8. I would describe myself as a realistic fiction reader. Ever since a young age, I've always loved realistic fiction. I've always been a big fan of hearing about other people's lives, and plus I like talking about my own. When my mom, brothers, teachers, or peers would hand me a book with a dragon, or fairy on it, i would push it away. Fantasy is a genre that is unbelievable for me. Not in the outstanding type of way, but in the, "If I read this I will role my eyes and never believe a sing word." kind of way. On of my top picks are the Judy Blume book,"Blubber." It gives you that sense of being in a bad situation, at the wrong time, with the wrong person. Also the Judy Blume books,"Super Fudge, Fudge-A-Mania,Tales Of The Fourth Grade Nothing, and so many others." These books are all about spontaneous things that happen in a normal kid's life. So for pretty much now since maybe first grade I want to say, have i never EVER picked up a fantasy book, but if I were to read it for school that would be just fine.

  9. I like to think of reading as my favorite thing to do. I have loved to read since I learned when I was in preschool. Communication has always been a strength of mine. The first books that I read were the Bob Books, and Dr. Suess. Then, in first and second grade, I began to enjoy Fantasy books like Magic tree house, and The Rainbow Magic series. In third and fourth grade, I found interest in Mysteries, such as Cam Jansen, and Nancy Drew. Finally, This year I have read the Sisters Grimm series, which consists of 9 large novels. I have also recently began the Land of stories series, which is similar to the Sisters Grimm series.
During fourth grade, our class completed a Realistic Fiction unit. During this unit, I read what I could consider to be one of my favorite books. This book is titled “Ninth Ward”. It is set in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward. The main character is a 12 - year - old girl named Lanesha. She and her loving caretaker, Mama Ya-Ya live in Ninth Ward, when hurricane Katrina occurs. It is up to her to keep them safe. This book made a big impact on my journey as a reader. It helped me see the world through the eyes of someone else. This is why “Ninth Ward” is my favorite book. I have read many amazing books in the past, and I hope that sixth grade will bring many more to my future.

    1. I have been with you since preschool, Gracie, and I know your love for books! You are an intimate reader and I love all the book recommendations you have for me, such as the "Sisters Grimm" series by Michael Buckley. You have helped me shape my love for reading, as well. I also share a love of the "Magic Tree House" series by Mary Pope Osborne. It is a great beginner chapter book! I have a question for you. Do you know who "Ninth Ward" is written by? It sounds like a great book, and I want to try it, to see if I like it. Thanks!

  10. When I read, I get sucked into the book. I can picture myself in the characters shoes and imagine myself going through their story with them. It's easy for me to instantly make a picture in my mind about what the setting and characters look like, even when the book doesn't describe the features. I fly through books. I'm always asking for book requests from my friends and family. My favorite books are any of the books by Kate Dicamillo. She makes her writing fun! My favorite Kate Dicamillo book is Ramie Nightingale. It's about a girl who's father left her and her mother. She wants to win Little Miss Florida Tire so her father will come back.I also love reading fantasy. My favorites are the Land Of Stories. I'm into action books so fantasy is a good fit for me! I'm hoping to be challenged in my reading during 6th grade by having to think more about what I'm reading.

  11. Although I love to read I can be very picky when I choose books. From when I first picked up a book I found it very hard to get into the book. I would just get bored and want to do something else after a couple of sentences. My mom loves to read and really encouraged me to keep trying to love to read. She would help me get into books and really picture what was happening. I then enjoyed books more, and more as I grew as a reader. By fourth grade I really loved to read, but in some books I would still get very bored. It was just because I didn’t like the books, not because I didn’t like to read.

In fourth grade I found a book that I loved called “When You Reach Me”. I loved this book so, so much. I read it for two hours one night. The book was mystery and a little scary. From then to fifth grade I read scary books that also had some mystery, and now I love to read. After reading those types of books I could read other types of books and enjoy them too.

    1. That is a great book! I completely agree with you that "When You Reach Me" is an awesome reading selection. I appreciate your love for reading. I started my love for reading towards the end of fourth grade, too! I think it takes guts to read scary books, so that is quite the accomplishment that you have made since transferring to scary books that have some mystery. Great job!

  12. I would describe myself as an intrigued reader. I love to read. My favorite time to read is when it is stormy outside and Mom turns up the heat inside. It is so warm and cozy inside on days like that. My favorite place to read is in my room on my bed. I wrap up in the covers and usually get something to drink like lemonade or hot chocolate and put it on my night side table. I sip it as I read. Some of my favorite authors are J.K Rowling, Mo Williams, Beverly Cleary, Raina Telgemeier and Roald Dahl. My favorite genres are fantasy, mystery, fiction and comics such as, "Harry Potter," "Matilda," "James And The Giant Peach," "Smile," "Sisters," "The Twits," "The BFG" (Big Friendly Giant,) and "Chasing Vermeer." I sometimes read for as little as fifteen minutes or I get so absorbed that I read for two hours straight! Usually once I start reading, I feel like I'M IN THE BOOK. It feels SO real! Well, if the author does a good job describing feelings, the setting and the characters, that is. I don't particularly like long books or short books, I just like a good story. I like books with pictures, especially animated ones. I also like books that don't have pictures because it allows you to decide what the setting and characters look like yourself. Reading is very relaxing and fun to me! I love reading!

  13. I would describe myself as a historical fiction reader. I simply adore reading.I love reading about what has happened in the past even though it might not be entirely true. When I am reading these types of books, I like to think that I am there experiencing what it is like to live as a pioneer or what it felt like to live in the middle of the "segregated south". I suck in the valuable information these topics and try to hold on to the lessons they try to teach us. Some of my favorite historical fiction books I have read in the past are "Just Jane", "Yard War", "Under the Blood Red Sun", and "The Watsons Go to Birmingham". All of these books are about important moments in our history. When I start to read books like these I devour the information in a blink of an eye. In all of these books I get to learn about important time periods in our history and I also get to enjoy a great read.

    1. Kate Maree, I totally understand why you love historical fiction so much! Like you, two of my favorite historical fiction books are "The Watsons Go to Birmingham" and "Under the Blood Red Sun". I loved reading "Under the Blood Red Sun" in our fourth grade book club together! If you think of any more great historical books that you would recommend to me I would love to know! I would totally describe you as a historical fiction reader!

  14. I would describe myself as a slow reader. When I read a book I like to really get lost in it, not read it fast to get it over with but to really read and picture myself in the book. I also think of myself as a reader who gets lost in a book. When I read I usually read for 40-60 minutes. I usually forget to stop and finish the book. I am very excited for a calm summer where I can lay by the pool and get a good tan wile reading a good book and enjoying it too. Have a good summer!!

  15. When I sit down to read, I find myself in a different world. No matter the book I love to take a moment out of my day and just read. I started loving to read when I was in Kindergarten. Everyday we would circle up and the teacher would read to my class. Even if it is just a picture book I would wonder off into whatever the setting of the book is. When I was able to start reading chapter book I always read over what the homework was. I have always read over the homework because the books never would stop getting better, and better. I have read a lot of great books that I love! In 1st grade I started with the magic tree house books. In 2nd grade I started reading the Little House in the Prairie.

  16. I have never been into fantasy or scary stories, but I love realistic fiction and mysteries. I also love being able to relate to a book. For example, in the book All rise for the honorable perry t. cook. Perry is eleven and I am eleven. At home I have a chair I love to read in. After school I go into my room and sit in my chair and read. This year during school I read a book called chasing vermeer. I loved the book so much I decided to read the rest of the series. I am going to read the book when you reach me this summer. My friends said it was a great book, and the description was amazing. It also got wonderful reviews on Amazon. When I was in Third grade I started to love reading. The book that got me into reading was Dork diaries. I would read even if I was not supposed to. I would go through a book every three days so my mom made me read the book twice before I could get a new one.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I would describe myself as a reader for sure. When I picked my first book all I was interested in was the pictures, instead of reading the books I read the pictures. When I was younger I would only read the exact amount of time I had to, not one minute more. Reading then was homework for me.
I noticed that reading for me is more fun when you sit down without a timer and get lost in a book. For me it’s easy to get lost in books that are fantasy, mystery (which are my two favorites), historical fictions, and many more. I think it’s easier and more fun to learn through books for example recently I was reading The War that Saved my Life and it taught me a lot of facts about World War II. Last year I was reading A Series of Unfortunate Events and I would come across a word I didn’t know and in the next sentence of the book it would define the word, that series expanded my vocabulary.
Now reading is more of a hobby for me then homework, it’s something I choose to do than something I have to do. Reading now is fun for me now especially when you're reading a good book.

  18. I would describe myself as a slow, but good reader. I love to just pick up a good book and read. I read a ton. My family (Bert) makes fun of me because I read, read, and read. The kind of books or genre I love to read is realistic fiction. It isn't based on a true story but it isn't impossible. I will pick a realistic fiction and read myself to sleep, it is so good.
The time that I really started to enjoy reading was in 3rd grade. My teacher read our class a ton of realistic fiction. I was so in love that I started reading the next book to the series. Then, it captured me, I just couldn't stop reading. The books or genre I dislike is fantasy. I tried a Harry Potter, and it just didn't hook me. Even though I dislike them now, I might try them and like them when I get older. I will always like reading though. Reading to me is finding myself in a whole new world and exploring every part of it.

  19. I would describe myself as a reader who loves to push herself and strife to read more and work harder on a book.Reading takes me on to a whole new level. My favorite genre is realistic fiction or mystery because I love the excitement in books that make you want to keep reading and reading.I usually catch myself reading for pleasure more than reading for homework assignments.
A couple of years ago I was talking with a group of friends and they told me how much they read and I thought to myself, " wow I should really start to read a lot more", and from that day forward I have been a much more active reader and a better one reader too. I think reading is a great use of time.

    1. I love realistic fiction too! Like you said, reading these kinds of books takes me to a whole new level of reading. Realistic fiction helps me to imagine myself in the story. It is a little harder to do that with fantasy, because of all the magic and impossible things that happen in those books. Sometimes, I can even relate to the stories of realistic fiction. That way, I feel really connected to the characters.

  20. I would describe myself as a reader. When I read,I get lost in the book, it's like being in your own world. I always thought about reading as fun, so a reading assignment to me, was never really considered homework. My parents always said that I always wanted to read the story to them at bedtime when I was little. They also said that when I was learning my sight words I would ask to go over them.
I would also say that I am a dreamer, so reading fantasy for me has always been my in my top favorite. When I was little I had all the “Magic Fairy” books, and would read them one after another. In 4th grade I was interested in a series called, “What Ever After”. It was about a brother and sister who traveled to fairytale lands, from a mirror in their basement. One of my recent favorites that I have read is probably, “Land Of Stories”. That is also about a brother and sister, who travel to one big fairy tale land. A next favorite is realistic fiction. I love reading about things that happen in an everyday life. One of my favorites I read in 4th grade, “Wonder” I love it because it's so emotional, and it makes you wish it was longer. One of my favorite books out of all of them is “Waiting For Normal”. It just makes you want to keep reading and reading. I will always think of reading as fun, and never as an assignment.

  21. I would describe myself as a slow and fast reader. Sometimes I will just zoom through a book. But most books I read a parts of the book over and over again until I get it. I love to push myself to be reading harder books with harder words. When I am reading I am taken into the setting of the book and cannot stop READING!

My younger brother (Tanner) is an amazing reader. Even though he is one year younger he still recommends amazing books. Some of the books Tanner recommends I can just not put down. Well that is normal for most books. But being recommended by a younger kid shows you how good of a reader he is.

I would consider myself as a slow reader because I want to understand every bit of the story. Even if I have to read a part over and over so be it.

I also would consider myself a fast reader because, sometimes I just fly through a book getting every single detail that is happening through the story.

I feel like I am a strong reader and is willing to push harder to read the best to my ability.

  22. I would describe myself as an unpredictable reader. I love all genres and can't decide which one to read. One week I will read fiction books and the next week I will be reading autobiographies. I think that this a good trait because I will not skip over great books because of their genre. I love to push myself to try new things and read harder and harder books, and because of this, It has turned me into the great reader that I am today.

  23. I would describe myself as a slow reader that likes to get all of the details from the book I am reading. My favorite genre is historical fiction because I like learning about history. I also like mystery because I want to know what is going to happen next.
When I read each night I never considered it homework. When some people ask, "did you read 30 minutes last night for homework?" I respond with a pause and then a yes. I pause because when they said for homework I never considered it homework.
When I really started to love reading real chapter was in second grade. When my teacher read us "Charlotte's Web." When she first told us she we going to read it to us I thought it was going to be boring but once we really started to get into it I loved it. I can't wait for sixth grade to become a more powerful reader.

    1. I agree with you about not considering reading "homework". I read every night anyway (even in the summer.) I like to read so reading homework isn't considered homework to me. I love to read and so when we are required to read each night, I'm excited! Most people ask me, "You're excited to do HOMEWORK?" I simply reply yes. Reading is fun! Who wouldn't be excited about "reading homework"?

  24. I would describe myself as an action reader. There is nothing that I love more in a book than some action. I also love a book where you can make some really deep predictions. All of these qualities are in my favorite book series is "Peculiar children". This series was written by Ransom Riggs, who is my favorite author. These books are full surprises and a ton of action.

  25. I would describe myself as a dedicated reader because when I find a good book, I can't ever put it down. I imagine myself as being a part of the story. My favorite genres are fiction and historical fiction. I love these particular genres because I love feeling like I i'm in the moment whether it's on the battlefield or on the football field trying to win one million dollars.

My love for reading started when I was a kindergarten. I started reading easy books, but as I got older, I started reading more challenging books. During independent reading time in kindergarten, I used to pick up a book and go sit in the corner and silently read to myself until my teacher (Mrs. Rannels) told us to stop. I still keep on reading quietly to myself today. One of my all time favorite books is called The Million-Dollar-Throw by Mike Lupica.

As I read some books, I often get stumped and don't know what is going on in the story. To refresh my mind, I put down the book and take a deep breath and then restart again. As I get older I will continue to read good-fit books. I hope become a become a better and more focused reader in sixth grade.

  26. I would describe myself as a reader for sure. I have always loved to read. I started by reading the pictures, but now I am not even looking at the pictures I am to interested in the writing. When I was younger I thought that reading was boring, but as I have gotten older I have realized how much more fun reading is. In 3rd grade I had a lot of trouble finding a book I loved, but by 4th grade had found many book that I enjoyed. Now I love to find a comfy spot to sit down and get lost in a book. I have always loved to read fantasy books because I can really imagine it as if I was the main character. In 4th grade I was opened up to many more fantasy books such as Harry Potter, and all of the Roald Dahl books. I thoroughly enjoyed ready Witches by Roald Dahl, and for a while it was my favorite book. I also love to read books that I feel I can relate to, and make a connection with a character in it. That is me as a reader.

  27. I would describe myself as a very picky reader. For example, the first summer that I got to Oak Hill School I was in rising fourth grade. In that summer I was pulling books off my shelves and I was reading the first chapters of them but I would just put them back because I didn't find them interesting. Then I started asking my parents for ideas. Me and my dad have always had a love for World War 2 books and movies, thats when I came across of "Hitlers Secret". I read "Hitlers Secret" about five times that summer and I couldn't put it down. Now when I need to read a book I can always look for World War 2 books.

  28. I am a reader who loves fantasy. My favorites are The Hobbit, The Maze Runner series and Percy Jackson. All the books are in a special place in my heart. The Hobbit was an amazing adventure that left me in awe and shock. It through so many good cliff hangers on chapters that I kept reading and reading. Percy Jackson books were absolutely perfect. I loved all the action and build up for the last book. The last book was a masterpiece by Rick Riordan. The emotion and relationship put into this book were amazing. Now the Maze Runner. Although the series is unfinished the first three had no words to describe them except for one, Wow. Now for my least favorites, Mystery and Poetry. Mystery never seemed to get me hooked or in love with a series. Poetry is a beautiful art but most of it doesn't have that click.

I love to read especially when it is a story I can relate to in some way. Personally, I do not enjoy scary books because I like to read about happy or funny things. One of my favorite books of all time is, “Heaven is for Real”. I like this story because it is heartwarming and touching. When I get lost in a book I feel that I am one of the characters. This feeling is a magical feeling you can only find with some books. I love this feeling so much that it encourages me to read more.
When I was little I was not the best reader. However, I persevered and worked hard. Also, I am a little bit of a slow reader and it normally takes me a little longer to finish a book. I do not let this affect my consistency with reading. I have found that if you work really hard to improve your reading skills, you will improve.
Personally, I do not like to get books from the library because I like to know that the book is mine. There is something about owning the book that comforts me. Also, I do not like that there is a due date and I feel rushed to read the book. I like to take my time and read at my own pace. I feel this describes me as a reader.

  31. I would describe myself as a nonfiction reader because I love taking in all the amazing facts and fascinating features about history and animals. It also makes me think about the incredible world God has made for us, and the bad things to learn from it. Nonfiction is a genre that is not only fun to read, but you also learn a lot by reading it. Reading nonfiction for me is a great way to spend time if you’re bored and have nothing to do.

  32. As a reader, I really love to read books that relate to me. If I am reading a book that relates to me in any way, it is more interesting to me. I also really love to read things that are happy and have made me want to keep reading. I also love books that have a happy ending. My favorite thing about reading is that it relaxes me. Personally, I think reading is very peaceful and happy. I also really love to get lost in a book and really enjoy it instead of reading a little bit every day. I also do not like to be rushed when I am reading. I like to take my time while reading and really think about the book. I feel that this really describes me as a reader.

  33. I think that I would describe myself as a happy reader because whenever I read, I feel happy. Ever since I learned to read, I have loved reading and I never want to put down a book even if I think it is boring because I always want to see what happens next. I like to finish the book that I am reading instead of going halfway and then starting a new one so that I don’t get the themes of the books mixed up. This way, I can also understand the book much better.

I love basically every book I read. It doesn’t matter what topic or what genre. I just like to read. It also doesn’t matter what setting I read in. I like to read outside on a sunny day or if it is a rainy day, I’ll read inside on the couch.
I also like to check books out from the library so that I’ll have more options about what book to read. I think all this sums up what sort of a reader I am.

  34. I would describe myself as a fantasy reader. I love reading books about magic but right now I am reading a book about woodland creatures that talk. I also read very fast so I am always wanting new books to read. I will sometimes read two series at once. Even though I do those things I still can remember the details. I also like reading realistic fiction. These are the things that make me the reader I am.

  35. I would describe myself as an avid reader. I love books of all kinds, from sports books to Greek mythology to fantasy. From John Feinstein to Veronica Roth, I love it all. My favorite books include the Maze Runner series, the Alex Rider series, and all Rick Riordan books. In addition to books, I like reading publications such as Sports Illustrated and newspapers (the sports section, of course). I like to read as an escape and, also, to learn new things. I enjoy reading so much that I can read anywhere. I think that sums up what kind of reader I am.

    2. Hi Daniel! My favorite book by Veronica Roth is "Four." I loved "Four" because it was a prequel to the "Divergent" series and also written from Tobias' perspective.

  36. As a reader I love non fiction books. I love reading a good book about World War 2, or about a famous athlete or team. When I was little I loved dinosaurs. I would read books and encyclopedias about dinosaurs all the time. When I became a older I found it great to read biographies and autobiographies. One of my all time favorite books was a biography about Michael Jordan. It told all about his entire childhood and basketball career. One more non fiction book I love is called “D-Day.” It gives tons of information about the U.S troops storming the beaches of Normandy and attacking the Nazis. Non fiction is a great, fun way to learn and will always be my favorite genre of reading.

  37. I would describe myself as a Fantasy, Action, and Adventure kind of reader. I really like the books that have no pictures because you can imagine the things that aren't real in the book and bring them to life in your mind. I would describe myself as a slow reader really because I just like to take my time reading and understanding the book. One of my favorite books that I really liked was "Harry Potter," I really liked it because of all the action and fantasy that it brought to my mind. Action, Adventure, and Fantasy are three of the many genres that formed me into the reader I am today.

  39. I like to read action books and biographies. Action books are fun for me because they hold my interest. The action books that have surprising twists and turns in the plot are really exciting to me. Sometimes if I read a book that I am not interested in I can get bored easily and lose my focus. I like to read biographies because I like learning about the lives of famous people in history and how they grew up. I like to learn about times in history and how it shaped that person and their life. I am not a fast reader, but when I find a book that I like, I can comprehend the book better and enjoy it much more.

  40. I would describe myself as a curious reader. I like to read a lot of different books and genres. Many people say that I like to read above my grade level. One of my all time favorite books is Divergent. I liked that book because there was a lot of action, adventure, and a really good plot line. My favorite genres are Fantasy, Action-Adventure, and Realistic Fiction. I like to learn about magic and Greek and Roman mythology. My parents sometimes say that I don't read the book I just skip over. I would also describe myself as a fast reader. My siblings always get jealous of my because I have always been a good reader since I was a little kid. I also usually find a good book but sometimes I'll try a book but it is not a good book for me. Really all I have in my room is a cupboard full of books so I always have a really good summer just reading good books.

  41. I'm a quick paced reader and captivated by fiction books by J. K. Rowling, Roald Dahl, James Patterson and Rick Riordan. Also, World War II books about the Holocaust and POW camps entice me because it just makes me wonder how mean the world can be and how twisted some people can be. I have to be interested to be able to read fast. I get lost in a book easily and can tune out all kinds of noise when I'm reading a good book. I like to get book recommendations from teachers and the librarian. I used to hate reading and not be able to find one book I liked. When the Harry Potter books came along, I became a big reader. I usually notice small and big details about what I read.

  42. I am a very avid reader. I love reading and am always willing to try new books. I can read pretty much any where anytime, I can pick up a book and immediately get sucked into it! Sometimes I will be so into a book I will read it, finish it, then look at the clock and see that it’s 11:45! I love to read all the time. I am always excited to go into the library, because I know there are fantastic books behind the door just waiting for me! When a book is too hard for me or not that interesting, it’s hard for me to read the book let alone finish it! I always try to read the book, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out. I love to read challenging books to test me and easy ones just because it’s fun! Overall I feel that I am a very strong and avid reader.

  43. I'm a slow reader who likes to go through every sentence, and picture what it would be like to be in the main character's position. I usually read to an hour to an hour and a half. Most of the time I will be supposed read around 30 minutes and I end up reading around 45 minutes. I like to read on my couch so I get very comfy and don't want to leave when I am reading a book.

  44. I'm a slow reader. I like to picture what it would be like to be main the main character. I like to take a pause after a chapter and think about what I just read. When I am into a book I don't want to leave. I like to read when it is very quiet so I can imagine what it's like to be in the book.

  45. As a reader I love to read Historical fiction and non fiction. I love reading Books about the civil rights movement. I also love to read a book about a football team or a basketball team. When I am into a book I don't want to leave it. I like to imagine what it would be like to be in the characters position. I am a very slow reader. I will go back and read a page if I don't fully understand what I just read. I prefer to read when it is quiet because it helps me comprehend better.

  46. I'm the type of reader that, if interested, in a book could read a book very quickly. But if someone makes me read something that I find uninteresting or boring it will take me months to read. I love reading books that are dystopian. For example this summer I have enjoyed reading the Divergent series and hope to read Hunger Games soon. I prefer to read in quiet places so I can really comprehend and understand what I'm reading better. Although, I have learned to read with calm music playing. Over all I love to read and wish I read more often than I do.

  47. I really like to read non-fiction books; especially books that deal with weather. It is so interesting to me to read about national disasters. I hate that it happens, but it is so unreal to understand that they really did happen.
I also really like to read about sports. Overall I am a slow reader. It takes me a while to really get into a book. Once, a book does spark my interest it is very hard for me to put down. I also get distracted easy, so I need to be in a quiet setting.

  48. I would like to describe myself as a slow and steady reader. When I started to read I found out I had a weakness in my right eye that made it so that I say double. I had to take therapy and get some special glasses. I started falling behind and when I caught up I still could not read as fast as everyone else but I love the books I read.
The kind of books I like to read are fantasies. Some books I have read are “The Hidden World Of The Changers” series by H.K Varian, “Animas” series by C.R Grey, “The Immortals” series by Tamora Pierce, and “ Warriors Power Of Three” series by Erin Hunter. I love fantasy books because I am intrigued by magic and wonder. I am not the biggest fan of nonfiction books but I will read them once in awhile. I have made great improvements with my reading skills and I will work on my reading even more.

  49. I would describe myself as a long chapter book kind of reader. I usually read Historical Fiction or fantasy books. I am a mood reader, so if I am anything but in the reading mood I don't enjoy it as much. I'm also a quiet reader, I read better when people aren't talking or especially laughing. In conclusion, I'm a Chapter book, Fantasy/Historical Fiction, quiet reader. That is how I would describe myself as a reader.

  50. I enjoy reading historical and realistic fiction books. Reading these types of books are interesting to me. I enjoy reading about what America was like when it was first founded. This summer I have read books about the Revolutionary War and Civil War. I also enjoy traveling to historic Civil War landmarks in Tennessee.

  51. I describe myself as a slow reader who tries to understand the story and really take the position as the main character. I like to know everything about the book while I am reading it so I understand it better. I like to read biographies about sports people. I also like to read funny books. One thing I don't like about reading is that I sometimes think about other things.

  52. I would describe myself as a mystery/biography reader. Whenever I read a mystery book, I get so into the story that I can’t put it down. One time I was in my bed reading, and I picked up a 50 page mystery book. I was just going to read the first couple pages, and twenty minutes later I had finished the book. I feel like when you are reading a mystery you can’t look away or something might happen in the story. I also have always loved to read biographies. I fell in love with one I just read about Steve Jobs and his life. I love to learn about cool people, and the best way to do that is through a story.

If there is one type of story I could do without, it would be fantasy. It’s not that I don’t like reading about half rabbit half unicorn animals running around drinking hot chocolate and making sweaters, it’s just that I love reading about stuff that actually could (or did) happen. This is how I would describe myself as a reader.

  53. I am a reader that enjoys realistic fiction and sports books. I am an attentive reader. A good thing that happens to me when I read is that when I read a little bit I can’t stop. A bad thing that happens to me when I read is that sometimes I will try to read in a noisy place and I won’t actually comprehend. One genre that does not interest me is historical fiction because I feel it is a little boring. If I were to describe myself as a reader in three words, they would be attentive, deep, but sometimes reluctant.

  54. I Describe my reading habits as I like more adult sized book's. In witch I can learn more about our nations past for instance I just finished a book about great Baseball stars like the great Bambino himself fighting in his infantry as a heavy gunner. I like book that you have to have a great deal of previous knowledge before reading the book. Also being able to connect with older people around me like my Grandpa and talk about Babe and his game and what he did in the war.

  55. As a reader, I describe myself as a picky reader. When I read, I must find a book that is fully in my interest. If it is not fully in my interest or even halfway, I will not pick that book. I like to read books that have a little bit of comedy and a lot of adventure. Those books could range from realistic fiction to fantasy. Some books I do not like to read, are in the genre of some mysteries and historical fiction. These books and genres do not interest me as much. What I like about reading, is that it pulls you into a whole different world, and makes you feel like you are there. Something I don't like about reading, is that sometimes a book can get into a boring part, but I know you have to stick with it, because the book will get better. When I read, I also tend to get distracted by other things. This is how I am as a reader.

  56. I like to read action and fantasy books like Harry Potter and The Maze Runner. These books make me want to keep reading for hours and hours. I am slow reader, so I read frequently. I like to know all the important details about the book because that helps me predict and visualize what is happening. When I get hooked in, I will bring my book with me anywhere I have to go. I like to read almost anywhere that doesn’t have much noise.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I would describe myself as a realistic fiction reader. I love to think while i am reading, that this could be happening to someone right now. Thinking that makes me just way more interested in a book. I love it when books make me laugh or cry, because that just means you are “reliving the book.” Like once my sister was tanning, and I was in the pool. Out of nowhere she just started crying like sobbing. I was like what is wrong and she said it was a sad part in her book. It made me laugh how much she was into her book.
My favorite kind of book, would have to be a when the character tells the story. Because it just makes it that more interesting.

  59. I would describe myself as a slow reader who likes to read non-fiction baseball books. I like these types of books because I like to learn more about the great baseball players who played the game before me. Even though I'm a slow reader I like to understand what is happening in the book. One thing I don't like about reading is that my eyes sometimes play tricks on me and I will read sentences three or four time i a row

  60. As a reader, I enjoy many genres, topics, and styles. Although I like to keep an open mind regarding my reading, I do tend to prefer some books over others. As a result , I enjoy challenging myself with my reading and I often take advantage of my sister, Olivia’s, love for literature and use her past books as inspiration for my own future reads. If I find myself stumbling over a word that does not seem to be in my own comprehension, I reach for a dictionary to aid my lack of verbal diversity. The second fact about myself and my reading is that I most often read to escape this world. I read to travel to another time and place, and because of this, I usually find myself reading fantasy fiction books the most. The last fact about my reading is that I truly love books with dynamic characters, and there is a quote that describes one of my favorite things about reading flawlessly; “When reading, we don’t fall in love with the characters’ appearances. We fall in love with their words, their thoughts and their hearts. We fall in love with their souls” (Author unknown). These are just some of the facts about my reading that affect my choice in literature.

  63. I would describe myself as a reader, as not really an open reader to many genres. I normally would read sports book like Jack W. said, but this year I tried to read more genres and I also read magazines. I read an interesting book this summer called smile and I got in the zone when I read the book. I started to figure out that I liked comedy books such as the series of I funny books by James Patterson. Reading has not been an interest of mine but it was more of an interest this summer.
