Captivating Characters

DEAR 6TH GRADE READERS,

I just finished a book recommended to me by my mom. At first I was skeptical as to whether I would enjoy it, but I continued to read and push through and found myself reading a story that I would eventually consider thought-provoking and hard to put down.
As I read this particular book, I was drawn in by the captivating characters. Each character had multiple hardships that influenced how they saw the world and how they treated others. At times it was hard to have empathy for some of the characters and their actions, but the author did a wonderful job giving background knowledge for each character and no matter how villainous the character, the reader was able to understand the character. I could not put the book down as I anxiously read to see how their lives unfolded. Have you read a book where you fell in love with a character, where they came alive? If so, tell us about the character and why you were captivated by them.
So far I have enjoyed reading your blog responses and have noticed your thoughtfulness. Be sure to edit your post making sure titles are capitalized, sentence structure is strong, and word choice is precise. This is 6th grade -- it is time to raise the level of your thinking and writing!
Here are book trailers last year's 6th graders created of their favorite books which you may want to read over the summer. Remember students will recommend a wide variety of books -- different genres, reading levels, and maturity levels. I encourage you and your family to use Common Sense Media and other book reviews to see if the book is appropriate for you. There are many, many options!
Hope you are all enjoying your summer and taking time to meet new characters in your summer reading!

  1. While I'm reading "I'll tell you I love you, but then I'd have to kill you." I've fallen in love with the character, Cammie. She's a power strong character with a little spice. She is very smart, kind, and sassy. She's a ninth grader, spy, and her mom is the principal of her spy school. She's got a best friend, and they kinda conquer the world, (in their imagination.)

  2. I think I have fallen in love with a character from a book called "The Walk On". His name is Alex Myers. He is a young kid trying to make the football team for his new school. He is very good at quarterback but the coach kind of overlooks him because his son has been the starting QB the past two years. I like how Alex Myers does not give up and does whatever he can to make the team. I like Alex Myers because he never quiet when someone did not treat him fairly.

  4. I have read many books that I have fallen in love with along with the characters in it. One of my favorite book series ever are the Harry Potter books. I love almost all the characters in the big story of Harry's life and the war against Lord Voldemort. I love so many of the characters as I said, but I have a few definite favorites. One of those favorites is Hermione Granger. I love her because she very smart and loves to read and goes to the library all the time. She also is very kind. Hermione is tough and brave and fights in the battle against Voldemort and his deadly snake. I love all of those things about her, but the main reason I love her is because I can make connections with her. I love books too, and I try to be kind and helpful to others just like her. I also have done some things that are kind of scary just like her. I have stood up to bullies and have stood alone instead of standing in the crowd.

Another character I love in the Harry Potter series is Ron Weasley. I love this character because he is also brave. He has stood up to Lord Voldemort and his deadly snake as well. Ron is also funny. He is severely scared of spiders and wheezes every time he sees one. He also casts a spell on someone and it backfired and he started to barf up slugs. The spell he cast on the bully was called, "eat slugs." Ron also ate love potion chocolates and fell in love with a girl he never met. I also can make connections with Ron. I am also very scared of spiders and get shivers when I think about them. I have done many silly things just like Ron. I have fallen off my bike because I was looking at the video camera instead of what was in front of me. I also have slept walked into the living room and asked my parents if cart - wheels were fun. I have also eaten a burger and fries right before a basketball game and got really bad cramps. I love Ron Weasley!

Another character I love in the Harry Potter book series is Harry Potter. I love this character because he is very brave. He had stood up against Lord Voldemort more often than anyone. He stood up against him in the body of his professor in book one. In book two, he beat Voldemort in the "Chamber Of Secrets." In the third book, he stood up against a follower of Voldemort, a Werewolf and a mass murderer. In the fourth book he faced Voldemort in a graveyard. In the fifth book, he battled Death Eaters and Voldemort. In the sixth book he faced off against the "Half-Blood Prince." In the last book he let Voldemort kill him and came back to life and killed Voldemort. Harry Potter is awesome! I love many characters in the Harry Potter book series!

  5. I love the series called "The Land of Stories". I love the character Alex. The author (Chris Colfer) puts so much thought and details into all of his characters.
I love Alex because she is adventurous and brave. Alex is always looking for an adventure, even if it is through the mountains or the river. Also she is brave because she survived a witch who captured her. Alex is also very loving and sweet for example, she always want's to help others even if it is fairy's, animals, or humans even though how hard times are going. While I was reading I could not put the book down. I think that Chris Colfer is an amazing author. That is why I admire and love this series.

  6. While I was reading the book “Between Shades of Gray”, I started to really like Lina (the main character of the story). Lina is very brave, caring for others, and very strong mentally. One example of her being brave was when everyone was asleep Lina snuck out of the train car to find her dad who was put in a different train car. If she was caught doing this, she would face major consequences. One example of her caring for others was that when Ona’s (a mother in the same train car as Lina) baby died, Lina was comforting Ona and trying the best she could to help her. Lina is very strong mentally because after all of the harsh things she has seen and been through she still is positive that she will make it through these hard times. This is why I have started to really like Lina.

  7. When I read the first Harry Potter book I was immediately captivated by Hermione Granger. I could picture everything she did so clearly it was as if she was standing directly in front of me. I loved how she was eager to learn and try new things. Hermione was always determined to do her best whether it was on a Potions exam or fighting a dragon. Hermione became my best friend whenever I read Harry Potter. She always made the magic come to life. She might have been imaginary, but she was a true role model. I enjoyed reading about how she used her intellect to figure out clues that Harry and Ron never took the time to decipher. Hermione is a very interesting and exciting character to read about.

  8. One character that I especially love is in the book “Waiting For Normal”. The character's name is “Addie.” She is 6th grade, living in a trailer under a bridge across the street from a gas station, in new york. She just lives with her mom, Her dad died, and when her mom remarried, they got divorced. As abbie is forced to be live in a trailer in a bad area of town, because her mom has no job. Soon once her mom gets a job by, lying to people, her mom started leaving for a day or two, come home for a week and then leave again. Addie didn’t know where she was going, and it got to where her mom would leave for several weeks, come back for a day and leaves again. Addie didn’t tell anyone this was going on. I love addie because she was so independent, and she could work with a half loaf of bread and a trailer. Addie loves to play the clarinet, but they couldn't afford one. Her mom stole one from their old school. Addie knew what was right and when her mom was gone, even though their was a foot deep snow, and a day's walk, she walked it back down to the school. Then a tragic accident happened when her mom was gone, and, Addie spilled what had been going on for a long time. She knew it was the right thing to do. Addie also loved everyone, even if they were bad on the outside, because she knew their was good in everybody. Like when her mom was sent to jail, she still visited her, and told her she loved her. Addie is an independent, dreamer, lover, and someone who knows she right thing to do.

  9. While reading The Fault in our Stars, I fell in love with the character Augustus. Heres why, he stayed optimistic threw about everything. When Hazel and Augustus went to Amsterdam to meet Peter Van Houten (There favorite author) and he ended up being a rude alcoholic, Augustus stayed positive in this time of doubt, he even begin to right his own opinions about the book they (Hazel and Augustus) had hoped to get the answers for. He also stayed strong when he found out he was going to die of cancer. Not in the way that most people just say, "He fought a long and hard battle." But Augustus really did fight a long and hard
battle, he kept his comedic self t'ill the end, he tried to pretend he wasn't in this civil war against himself. In the book, Augustus says something along the lines of, "I am in a civil war with myself, If the cancer is me and I want to fight the cancer, than i'm fighting myself."I think this is very true, when your fighting a sickness and the sickness is inside of you, wouldn't you be fighting yourself? I mean, they are putting medicine inside of you to fight the disease, so aren't you in this battle against you?
I also liked Augustus because he was an intelligent and a kind person. At the end of the book he writes a long letter to Peter Van Houten asking him to write a eulogy for Hazel because he won't make it to . In this letter he tells Van Houten about his favorite memories with her and how much he loves her.
On the back of The Fault in Our Stars there is a review and it reads, "This is a book that breaks your heart-not by wearing it down, but by making it bigger until it bursts."
    - The Atlantic
I agree, this book builds you up by making you feel empathy and pleasure and then, that build up bursts.

  10. I have read lots of books that made me fall in love with the characters. One book that I read that made me feel in love with the character is Bridge To Terabithia! This book had a character named, Leslie. Leslie loved to go outside and play. I love going outside and playing too. We have many connections. we also both love to use our imagination. In this book Leslie plays in trees a ton. At my farm I climb trees too.. I use my imagination to play and have fun just like Leslie. I think our connection has made me love this book and this career. If you have not read the Bridge of Terabithia then you should read it.

  11. I have read many books that have taken me into another reading concept. I have read a book called Little house on the Prairie. Laura is a big character in this book. She is very brave. When I read this book, she inspired me to be brave when I do things I don't think I can not do. She is brave when she goes into the woods. She always is on a trail during the day, so she is used to the wild. She is very brave because when she sees a wild animal she doesn’t freak out, instead she is very calm.

Another book that I have read is When you return Miranda is the main character in this book. Miranda is very adventurous. She is always on the street with her friends after school and before. On the corner of her street, there is a homeless guy that sleeps under their neighbors mailbox. One day she brings the homeless guy a leftover sandwich she never ate. When she first saw him she thought he was going to be sort of rude. When she walked over she found he was pretty calm with everything. This character inspired me by being adventurous and try new things, and meet new people.

  12. A character that I have fallen in love with is Will Tyler from "The Underdogs" by Mike Lupica. He always gives 110 percent and tries as hard as he can to make things happen for himself. For example, when his small town, Forbes, Pennsylvania, wasn't going to have enough money to have their youth football league, Will wrote a letter to the head of New Balance to ask for a sponsorship to fund the league. The head of New Balance responded and gave him the sponsorship so he could play football. At this point in the book, I had fallen in love with Will. Football is my heart and soul, and I found out that it was his too. Will inspired me to go get things for myself and to never give up, no matter what.

  13. I have fallen in love with many characters and books. My all time favorite character though, would be Minho from The Maze Runner. I love him because he is always wanting to go the extra mile. For example, in the first book they kill a griever and while everyone won't go near it and just leave it there, he goes back in the maze to look at it and uses it as a clue. Also, Minho is loyal to his friends. In the first book when he could have just left hurt Alby in the maze, he sticks with him and does not leave his side. Another reason I love Minho, is because he is very brave. In the third book thomas gets shot and with all of the bullets flying everywhere, Minho dives out and saves thomas' life. I also love Minho because even though he does all of these heroic things, he is also a great, funny guy. Finally, I really love Minho because he is adventurous, for example when all of the lights are blaring and there are screeches everywhere, Minho goes and looks around. These are some reasons I love Minho from The Maze Runner series.

  14. I have fallen in love with many characters and books. One character I love is Annemarie from the book "Number the stars." I like Annemarie because she had to have courage when her sister died and when she had to hide her friend in her house from the Germans. Even though sometimes she had to lie to the Germans that her friend was her dead sister she was still honest. I also love her because she always thinks about other people than herself. I love how she and her family are so kind to hide her friend from the Germans. That is why I love Annemarie from "Number the stars."

  15. Growing up, I have experienced the lives of many fascinating characters. From “Amelia Bedelia” by Peggy Parish, to “Harry Potter” by J.K. Rowling, characters with strange and exciting personalities always grasp at your attention and don’t let go. Even the shortest of books have pages filled with imagination and adventure that bring it to life. For me, reading a book is always about how the main character(s) affect how things are done, or how they decide to change.
For example, one of the many characters that I have learned to love is America Singer, one of the many women in “The Selection”, by Kiera Cass. 16 year old America has no interest in winning the heart of Prince Maxon, but when she receives an invitation among others to be part of the selection, her boyfriend encourages her to register. Although America tries to persuade Prince Maxon that she does not want to marry him, she eventually falls for him and has to choose between him and her boyfriend, Aspen. Will she become the next heir, or will she drop out and live with Aspen, who has been with her all this time?
America Singer has captivated me because of her perseverance. Even in tough decisions and heartbreaking news, she has the ability to stand back up, and not everyone can do that. She can do what’s right even when she knows others may not approve. America Singer has captivated me throughout the series because she reminds me of many famous leaders who have served our country fearlessly.

  16. I have fallen in love with lots of characters in books but there is one character who beats all. In the book "Al Capone Does My Shirts", I love the character Moose. Moose recently moved to Alcatraz because his dad is a guard. Moose does not like Alcatraz because he misses all of his old friends back were he used to live. I admire Moose because of his adventurous spirit. Although Moose seems like a big tough guy he has a soft spot in his heart for his sister Natalie. Natalie is a smart sweet girl who has Autism. Moose has a good relationship with Natalie even though Natalie sort of lives in her own world. This character captivated me because he is a strong leader that shows compassion for others.

  17. There is one book where I really fell in love with the character. The name of the book is "Peculiar Children" by Ransom Riggs, who is my favorite author. The book was full of amazing characters, but one of my favorite was Bronwyn. She had a brother that she really cared for, just like me, but sadly her brother was killed by a hollow. Bronwyn is very caring and protective, but she is also fierce thanks to her peculiar ability of super strength. The main reason I fell in love with this character is because she will sacrifice herself for the people she loves.

  18. I have fallen in love with a character named Rush Revere in a series known as "Rush Revere." This series is about a regular person who has a talking horse named Liberty, who can time travel. They time travel to see historic events. Rush Revere really captivates me because he is so patriotic. I love people who really prize our country's uniqueness. I also love him because he enjoys history. That reason is true because I really enjoy history as well. Meaning that I love how people were brave enough to, for example, create The Declaration of Independance. I finally look up to this character because he has done some amazing things that I would have loved to do. For example, he talked to Benjamin Franklin, was a part of The Boston Tea Party, and went on the voyage with the Pilgrims. This character is a role model to me, which a captivating character should be to anybody. I really enjoy this series and recommend it to everyone in the Rising Sixth Grade.

  19. I have fallen I love with a character named melody in a book called "out of my mind" I really enjoy this character because she is very inspiring because she cant walk or talk but she is very smart, but no one know that. She makes me understand how fortunate I am to be able to talk and walk. Another thing I love about melody is that she never complained about what she looks like or what is wrong with her. I really love this book and the characters in it I advise everyone to read it I know you won't regret it!

    1. I also read that book!! I loved Melody also. I agree with you when you said you that she was inspiring because she didn't care what people thought or said of her she just did what she wanted to do. Like when everyone in her class was saying, "your not smart enough to go to the spelling bee." But she did it anyways.

  20. I have fallen in love with a character named Thomas in "The Maze Runner". I fell in love with him because he would always try to do what is best for the group and not just for himself. For example, he took one for the team when he ran into the maze when the doors were shutting. This is the kind of person I want to be like when I grow up.

  21. The book character I chose was R.A Dickey from his auto Biography Wherever I Wind Up. He was such and still is an enormous role model to me because he taught me three major things Family is Forever, Never give up even when life throws you a "curveball",and how to throw the perfect (ish) knuckleball. His auto biography starts off with The chapter name " The Worst Night Of My Life". The chapter was one of three most compelling chapters in the book it didn't describe much but it set the stage for what was coming next.

As a child R.A recalls his mother getting bit by a rotwiler while R.A was on her shoulders. He also recalls beating the stars out of a kid and just leaving the kid there. R.A to this day dosent know if that kid was and is ok.

He also recalls himself on the night he tore his UCL (a major part of the body for a MLB pitcher),Having the Texas rangers tell him "I'm sorry R.A we are releaseing you from the ball club. He thinks about the night he found steroids on the bathroom floor of the Blue Jays (Toronto) locker room. Or When he was abused Twice. Those are only to name a few bad experiences in his life.

Why I love R.A so much is because his bad and good experiences make him who he is today and that makes him thrive so much. His life experience is just like the song lyric "Started from the bottom Now we here". He lived so much more of a different childhood than I did and I think thats what makes him so strong.

  22. The character I have loved the most is Will Tyler from “The Underdogs”. I really love Will because he is very kind and is a real go-getter. In the book, he lives in a very poor town called Forbes, Pennsylvania. His town can not afford his school’s football team, so in the book Will sends a letter to the owner of New Balance asking him if they would sponsor their team. One other big challenge for Will is finding a coach and teammates. Will convinces his dad to coach the team even with his massive knee problem. The team is stuck at 10 players but they find an 11th a couple weeks before their first game. One more thing I love about Will is that he loves football just like I do. I was able to connect and agree with Will all throughout the book.

  24. While reading the “Land Of Stories” series I have fell in love with the character Alex. I feel like I have a lot in common with Alex. Alex is a very brave, adventurous, intelligent, kind, and caring person. Even though she faces many hardships she always finds a way to overcome them. Sometimes when I am reading one of the books I feel as if I am Alex. Another thing I like about Alex is that she always puts others in front of herself. I love to flip the page and see what Alex’s ideas are , and what she has to say. Alex is definitely someone I would want to be friends with. These are some reasons why I love Alex from “The Land Of Stories” series.

  25. I love the character, Violet Baudelaire, from, “ The Series of Unfortunate Events”. She is a leader but also lets other people take the lead when she feels they can do a better job than her. In the book, Violet’s parents die in a mysterious fire. Since Violet is the oldest she has to help her two younger siblings persevere even when she is trying to do so herself. She also has to deal with her crazy only relative who tries to marry her so he can take the wealth of the Baudelaire’s. For me, it is hard to help my little brother when my parents are around. I can’t imagine dealing with her situation. This is why I fell in love with her the second I started reading the first book. Violet does anything she can do to make the situation better. She perseveres and take the situation for what it is worth. If that’s not hard enough, in the first book no one believes her that her uncle is crazy. This character just amazes me of how well she handles stress and pressure. Those are the reasons I love Violet from, “The Series of Unfortunate Events”.

  26. I love the character Lexie from the book "Because of Mr. Terupt." She is a leader and sometimes has trouble to let other people take charge. She has to learn to persevere because she is having trouble with her family. She really loves her teacher who knows what she is going through and helps her out. She also learns to help her friends who are also having hard times. She always makes the books interesting with all of her interesting ideas. She is also very caring to everyone she meets even if she hardly knows them. If I had the chance, I would love to be friends with her. I love the character Lexie from "Because of Mr.Terupt.

  27. I love the character Mariel from the book "Mariel the Warrior". I like her because she was on a pirate ship and the captain threw her into the ocean with her hands tied behind her back but she managed to break the rope and swim to shore. She then used the rope as a weapon while she went through the wilderness. She fights for her life and never gives up and That is why I like her.

  28. I love the character Joe in the true story, "The Boys in the Boat." He has a very hard childhood and his parents leave him when he is 15 years old. Joe struggles to make any money because he is alone and it is the middle of the great depression. He works hard, and becomes a rower on the Washington crew. All of the members in his boat had similar childhoods and they are all very strong. Joe gets to compete in the olympics and wins first place. I like Joe so much because he worked so hard with no support from friends or family and still stayed confident.

  29. I have read many books where I fell in love with a character for example, the Harry Potter series. However, I am not going to write about those books today. No, I chose something different. The character I am going to be talking about is Katarina Bishop. (She goes by Kat.) Kat is a teenage girl from the books "Heist Society", "Uncommon Criminals", and "Perfect Scoundrels". What makes me love her so much is that in the first book, Heist Society, Kat goes to a school to try and get away from her family business. Her family business is robbery. They steal things. The only reason Kat comes back to steal is for a good reason. While stealing things is not considered a good thing, Kat only steals stuff so she can return the items to their rightful owner. That is what I love about Kat, is that she uses her many talents, for example, cleverness, she’s smart, and she also is willing to work with a team to get different jobs done. While she also draws you into the story so you want to see what happens next..

  30. This summer I read a book called “Zebra Forest” by Adina Rishe Gewirtz, and almost instantly I was captivated by the main character, Annie B. In the first chapter, Annie describes herself as “plain”. But in my opinion she sounds exactly like me, which is why I fell in love with her so quickly. Annie is short, 11 years old, and very self conscious. When she was a baby, Annie’s parents had left her with her Gran. Her mom had run away, and her dad had been killed. As she got older she asked more and more questions, and realized what she knew about her parents, was not the whole story. I felt a connection between Annie and I, as if she was sitting with me while I read. She has become what I like to call my, “Fictional Idol”, because she has all of the internal and external traits I want to have. She always puts others before herself, whether it is caring for her little brother, or getting groceries for her Gran. Annie thinks before she speaks, so that no foolish language will come out of her mouth. Annie B. is a fascinating character, and I hope to one day be like her.

He enjoys living with his owner, Abilene, but doesn't love her. One day Abilene goes on a cruise with her family and accidentally drops Edward into the ocean, where a sailor finds him. A few days after the sailor found Edward, he learns to love the sailor and his wife. Unfortunately there caught comes to visit and she throws him away. From there he goes to the dump and a homeless man and his dog find Edward. Over the course of the book Edward learns to love all those who become his owner. In the end of the book he finds Abilene and he learns to love her to. This is such a touching and heartwarming book that I will remember of a very long time.

  32. I personally have related to many characters throughout reading many different books. But the character I think I relate to the most is Alex Bailey from The Land of Stories. She is very adventurous, brave, courageous, strong, and filled with fear all at once. Those are all characteristics that I believe I have as well.
She is adventurous because she wanted to travel through the book to find out what was on the other side of the pages of The Land of Stories. I am adventurous because I like to try new things like sports, foods, and experiences. She’s brave because she decided that she had to complete many quests just to get home or save her family. I am brave because I do things that I don’t think I can. I think we are very similar to each other and have the same characteristics.

  33. The book I just finished is called "Powerless". The main Characters name is Daniel and he moves into the safest town in the world, Noble's Green. He starts seeing suspicious things relating to other kids. And finds out they have Powers. He becomes best friends with the group. At one point in the book he feels something we all feel sometimes. He gets hit with many unfortunate events and starts to feel, Powerless. We can all relate to this at some point in life. During the end the the villain gives him a ring that can take anyones powers and memories of the powers. He battles himself to make a final decision, To get rid of the ring. That is the second thing I can relate to is how some times the easy way out seems best but really its the hard way.

  34. A book character I fell in love with and brought to life was Hermione Granger, from the Harry Potter books. Hermione is a smart, free-spirited, joyful girl. Throughout the books you get to see her grow in intelligence and characteristics. Hermione is usually the teachers pet, but she also has a rebellious side. Hermione will sometimes go off script and break the rules, but other than that she is a good and honest student. I became captivated by Hermione because she is brave and will do almost anything for the people she cares about. She is always determined to do the right thing, whether it’s getting good grades in school, or helping out a friend Hermione is great about it!

Stanley never gave up and ended up escaping. While he helped so many others one the way he still managed to help himself. In my eyes Stanley will always be the most helpful courageous and caring person.

  36. A book character I fell in love with is Ben Ripley from the series spy school. The reason I fell in love with this character is because Ben is an ordinary kid that wants to be a spy when he grows up. He gets in to the secret school spy school only as bait to lure the enemy society SPIDER to them. Ben is determined to show he is good enough to be a spy by trying to beat SPYDER himself. I love how Ben tries super hard at what he has ever wanted even though the CIA thinks he will not make a very good spy.

  37. I feel like there are two times I have fallen in love with a character. The first one was Dash from the Space Case series. The reason I fell in love with this character is because at the beginning of the book he is kind of shy, but as you read through the story you will start to see how he opens up and becomes a large part of the story. I think if you really like a character you will start to feel emotions for him. In the book Space Case, there are a lot of chase scenes, and I would always feel scared for Dash. When the mean space warden Nina was mad at him, I would always feel like I was in trouble too. These are some reasons I loved reading about Dash.

The second was Steve Jobs in the biography Steve Jobs: Thinking Differently. When reading about Steve, I started feeling really involved in the story. I would never want to put the book down. When Steve would be designing a new Apple or NeXT product, I always felt like I was in the design room with him. It was so interesting to see how he developed Apple.

These were two characters I fell in love with in books.

  38. In the Percy Jackson series I fell in love with the character Percy Jackson. His bravery and good character inspired me and me think about what I could do in the future. I also liked Percy Jackson’s ability to think on his feet. Percy also thought about others before himself, and I saw what good things happened to him. This is why I fell in love with Percy Jackson.

  39. In the book Mr. Lemoncello's Library, I really liked the main character Kyle Keeley. One reason I liked him is because he has a competitive soul in games, trying to beat his older brothers, Mike and Curtis. Another reason I like him is because he doesn't give up until whatever he's doing is over. Even though he turns in a very incomplete essay, he went home that night and redid it, sending to Mr. Lemoncello himself. The essay was on what he thought the new public library would be like. His essay was so good that it got him in as one of the first 12 people to spend the night at the new public library. I also liked him because he won a $500 gift card to Mr. Lemoncello's store that sells everything that Mr. Lemoncello makes, like games and all kinds of other things. Because Kyle is a nice person, he splits the $500 evenly between all five members of his family. Kyle has a very kind and also competitive spirit.

  40. I just recently read a wonderful book called “The One With All The Hair” in the series “Twice Upon a Time” It is just like the original fairy tale “Rapunzel” but the author Wendy Mass added a new, interesting twist to the original. Before I read the book it literally sat in my bookshelf for TWO YEARS because the cover just didn’t look very interesting to me. This summer I finally decided to read it and I fell in love with the character Rapunzel. I fell in love with Rapunzel because she is a very polite 12 year old girl but she is very adventurous at the same time. My favorite thing about Rapunzel is that she never gives up even if the situation is close to hopeless. For example, on her 12th birthday when Rapunzel was about to get her much wanted and much needed birthday haircut, this old which came up to her and took Rapunzel away to an old abandoned tower. Even in that situation Rapunzel never gave up and kept trying to find a way out of the tower. Finally one day Rapunzel gets out of the tower and live happily ever after. This is why I fell in love with the book character Rapunzel. I think that this was a great book to read and recommend it for anyone who has not read it.

I have read that book 4 times and every time I have fallen in love with Tris because she is such a strong, independent women. She is a 16 year old girl having to decide between her beginning faction or choose a different faction. She chooses Dauntless and her family is very disappointed with her. But she sticks her head out and has a good attitude.

  42. I am reading a wonderful book called "All Rise For The Honorable Perry T. Cook." By Lesslie Connor. The Character Perry, has gone to live with his foster parents. I love how the author descried how he ended up with foster parents. I am happy that the author did not say once upon a time people pick a boy up at blue river.... That is my favorite book because it describes the characters so well.

  43. One of my favorite book characters is Sabrina Grimm from The Sisters Grimm series, by Michael Buckley.
11 - year - old Sabrina is brave, and caring, but also quite stubborn. After her parents sudden disappearance, she and her younger sister Daphne are forced to live in one foster home after another, each being worse than the last. One quality of Sabrina’s that I admire is her bravery. No matter what, she always protects her sister, and she is never afraid to stand up for what she believes in. The
author did an amazing job of helping readers imagine and empathize for Sabrina and Daphne’s situation. After finishing the series, I feel like I’ve known Sabrina for my whole life. The author also did an amazing job with character development. All of these different actions and qualities of Sabrina’s are what make her one of my favorite book characters.

  44. Ah, yes! I was scrolling through the blog and this prompt caught my eye, this is something that happens to me on a regular baises. There are so many books that have made me feel this way but some of my most love characters are from Inkheart and The Maze Runner. First of all Inkheart (by the way I recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure), the characters that really stuck to my heart where Mo (Mortimer) and Elinor. I think that why these characters really stuck to me was because they were a part of me. I am pretty sure that I will end up one day like Elinor, an old lady and her books in a small village in Italy. Next onto The Maze runner, I just finished this book a few weeks ago. The characters that I loved in this book was Chuck and Alby. I know the reason I love Chuck is because he stays optimistic and happy in a place where there is very little happiness. As the author did little to describe the outside appearance i fell in love will his words and actions, and he might have also reminded me a lot like Chunk from the Goonies. Alby, on the other hand, was the opposite. He was mysterious, yet was a strong leader and cared only for the safety of his people. Yet the thing that most impressed me was after he got stung and saw horrific things he stayed unchanged and still cared for Alby.

  45. Watanabe, aka The Bird, is a captivating character in Unbroken. He wasn't fiction. He was a living, breathing person in one of the world's most horrific events. It was the part of World War II that took place in the Pacific. Watanabe made death a part of daily life in the camps where all prisoners were kept. He was captivating because he came from a rich family but didn't make it to the higher ranks in the military. So he was put in charge of a POW camp. He was the lowest rank sergeant in the army, but it was the highest position in the POW camps. He would always invite prisoners to have tea with him and then the next day he would usually torture or kill them.

  47. I read a book called Kid Lawyer. I have fell in love with the main character Theodore Boone. He is around twelve years old and has two parents that are lawyers. His mom is a divorce lawyer and his dad is a real estate lawyer. He is a only child and claims to enjoy it. I have fell love with him because he has shown that no matter what age you are you can still do very important stuff in the book of the series he found a fugitive in a different state.

  48. As I read the book Out Of My Mind, I fell in love with the character Melody. She has to stay very calm throughout the entire book. Not being able to talk or move very well she can get easily frustrated, she can not respond to anyone. Other than just nodding her head yes or no. Many things only she knows about. Like her fish’s name, Ollie. Under Melody’s circumstances she is still very caring. For example, she still feels bad for her fish. In the book she tells that her poor fish was probably under worse circumstances than her. She thinks that it must be terrible to live in a tiny glass bowl. One day Ollie jumped out of its bowl. Her parents think that she knocked over the bowl, but really she was trying to give Ollie water to try to save him. Melody was very frustrated that her parents thought that, but she could not say anything. Melody has to stay strong throughout the book, and she does and also does not feel bad for herself. There are many things I find admirable about Melody in Out Of My Mind.

    1. I am in the process of reading Out Of My Mind too. I think it's a great book because it's inspiring to people with disabilities like Melody. Actually I think this book and the main character Melody would be inspiring to anyone. I find Melody captivating because she pushes through all the harsh words people say about her, finds ways to communicate without being able to talk, and has a strong heart and mind.

She really made me think on the book and the story it was telling. I learned that you have to fight for what you want. Annabeth was unlike the other female characters I’ve read about in other books.

  51. About six months ago I read the book "Eragon". The shade named Derzer caught my attention. I liked this character because he was so powerful, but still had to take orders from the king Galbatoryx. Even though he is evil, I still enjoy the action-packed scenes he is in. Derzer is introduced into the movie before the main character Eragon, a poor farm boy. As soon as I read about Derzer I knew he was my favorite character.

  52. This summer I read a book called Kisses From Katie by Katie Davis. It is an autobiography about a christian girl who lives in Brentwood and wants to go to Uganda to do mission work. Katie wanted to help kids who were impoverished and didn't have families. Katie is a brave, loving, kind, and unselfish person. She loved to play with the kids, help them get healthy, and loved to clean them off with clean water. Also she made a church, and a school for the Ugandan kids, and their families. Katie loved to help everyone who was sick and she would help them get better. I love Katie because she cares for everyone and not just herself.

  53. About a week ago I started reading a book called Changers. This book was something I picked up off the shelf at a bookstore and without even looking at the back of the book I was certain that I would love it.
When I started reading the book, it seemed boring, but then there was a startling discovery that only four students were in a class at the end of the day when everyone else had gym class. When that class started I got to meet the main characters. When they were told there were changers “which are magical creatures that are human but can turn into an animal” and were told what changers they were, one stood out to me. She was a redhead girl that could change into a silky. Silkys are creatures known for their song based enchantments. That settled it. I love to sing more than anything else in the world. This character was so much like me that when I finished the book I had a dream about it. Plus I finished the book in two days and the next one in the series just as fast, and am still waiting for the next one, which comes out in September! I can’t wait!

  54. This summer I read a book about a guy named Kirk Cousins. He is an NFL football player who plays for the Washington Redskins. He is the backup quarterback!!! when I read this book this summer it made me feel like I was in his shoes. I felt like I was on the field with so many football "stars", throwing passes and giving the ball to the running back. I thought it was so cool to imagine myself as a star and being a game changer to other people's life.

  55. This summer I read a book called Growing Up Gronk. It is about 4 brothers who all love football. They also love some other sports. They almost all had to go through tough decisions and difficulties. I learned good lessons through this book about how to be a better brother and to not give up on things. I have two brothers so I can see myself in there situations. Growing Up Gronk is one of my favorite books.

  56. This year I read a book about Tony Dungy. It is a book about his childhood and how he became a football player and eventually a pro football coach. I fell in love with Tony because he loved sports when he was young. Also, I admire him because during his years in the NFL every time he interviewed for a job and was declined he knew God had a plan for him and he would be ok. I was impressed by his perseverance during the draft and even after not getting picked. He didn't quit he worked even harder and finally the Pittsburg Steelers pick him up undrafted. A few weeks ago he was inducted into the hall of fame. I loved reading his autobiography.

  57. While I was reading “Like a River,” I fell in love with Leander Jordan. The day before Leander’s older brother had to help the union fight, he dove into a rock shelf and broke his spine. He could not move his legs, so he couldn't go into to the army. Leander felt he needed to take his brother’s place in the army. With the help of his brother’s friend, he convinced the army officials to let him get into the army. He was picked on in the army by a man named Bull. Bull said there was no room in the army for squirts like him. Then on his first battle he accidentally clogged his gun with mud and blew his arm off. When he regained conscious, his friend Giver was carrying him away from the battle. He passed out again and found himself in a wagon with a high fever and a stub for an arm. He went to a hospital where he saw a boy named Paul Settles helping all the wounded soldiers. He stayed there for a long time while he regained his strength. When he regained his strength, he started helping around at the hospital. When he thought he was strong enough, he went down to the nearest river called the Coosa. When he started to wade in the current, it swept him away. When he finally got back up, he saw Paul bathing in the river. When he looked closer, he saw that Paul was was actually a girl. When she was done she got up and put her clothes back on. When he was walking back to the hospital he wondered why a girl would pretend to be a boy. The next day he looked for Paul, but he could not find her. He went back to his home and worked non-stop with only one arm. Through perseverance, he did that everyday. Then one day Paul came to his house. He was surprised she was there. Leander had a lot of perseverance to get through that experience and that is why I like him.

  58. I love the character Jessica from the book, “The Running Dream.” I love the character Jessica because she is so inspirational. Even though Jessica losses one of her legs in a car accident, that doesn't stop her from running, the thing she loves. With the help from a prosthetic leg, her friends and family, track teammates, and coach she might just get to cross that finish line again. I love this book because of the amount of perseverance jessica has. It is also so fun to read because it is like a roller coaster, good things happen then on the next page something bad happens.

Now Jake and Taylor's mom is dating a mean man named Bull. The boys hate Bull so much that when their mom had fallen down some stairs she was rushed to the Hospital. Jake and Taylor ran away to try and font their dad. Along the way they met a lot of people they stumbled across obstacles. They meet this man named Skeet that was hunting Wolverines in Wyoming when a boulder fell on his arm. Jake,Taylor, and Cody (dog) ran to help Skeet. Skeet helped keep Jake and Taylor's secret and hide them from the authorities that were looking for them. Skeet taught Jake and Taylor how to survive in the wild. At the end of the book Jake and Taylor put together all of the clues and look for there dad. You will have to read the book to find out if they found their dad or not. The book is called "The Wilder Boys"

  63. This summer, I read a book called How to (almost) ruin your summer. This book is about Chloe McCorkle who spends her summer, at Camp Minnehaha, while her mom and dad are on a cruise in Alaska. Camp Minnehaha, is full of spiders, King Arthur ( a rampaging goat, who tries to destroy Chloe) and Victoria ( an evil cabin mate, who loves making Chloe humiliated. Chloe, on the other hand, is a normal girl trying to make the best out of Camp Minnehaha. She strives to learn some skills that will help her make money for the new bike she's been eyeing. I think Chloe is a very captivating character, because she shows that she can turn bad things into good, by showing a positive attitude. That is my idea of a captivating character.

Rachel was always mean to Astrid in the past. As the story moves on Astrid ends up going to the roller derby camp and meeting a new friend. I find Astrid captivating because Astrid is willing to make the most out of going to camp alone by having a great time and making a new friend.
