Readers Research

Dear readers,

This year we will read a fiction book that is based on a true story. The book takes place in Sudan, a war torn country in Africa. It is a glimpse into the tribal culture and the effects of war on civilians. 6th graders found themselves enthralled by the characters and setting and would go home at night and research Sudan and the tribes in the book. They read articles, looked at maps, and watched documentaries. In short, they built their knowledge to better understand what was going on in the book, and they let their curiosity drive their learning. Last year the students took it one step further and organized and executed the Sweets for Sudan project. As a teacher this was a pivotal moment where my students were actively pursuing their learning, their excitement to make the world a better place was contagious, and they chose to help those across the world because of a novel. Reading can be a powerful thing.

Personally, I am curious about a lot of different subjects and love reading articles. My curiosity about the world leads me to travel and learn about the history and culture of different places around the world. I am not able to travel everywhere or all the time, so often times I research about places or read fiction books that take me to places I may never see, and I feel as if my world expands through reading. I also do rather extensive research when planning a trip. Researching before hand helps me use my time wisely in a new place by exploring the places that most interest me and also will give me a sense of the current culture. I read blogs, reviews, articles, and check out travel books from the library. Over Christmas I will travel with my parents and brother to Peru and hike to Machu Picchu to see the ancient Inca ruins hidden in the Andes Mountains. No doubt I will read a lot before the trip to build anticipation but to also appreciate what I will see and experience.

In addition, I enjoy watching and playing sports. I often times look up inspiring athletes or articles about important games. As a former college athlete, I do not officially play a sport anymore, but I thoroughly enjoy knowing what is going on in the sports world. Researching historical figures and events, different places to travel, and sports in general are all subjects I am curious about and I enjoy expanding my knowledge and therefore my world.

What subjects would you research and why? What sparks your curiosity? What do you wish you knew more about?

  2. One subject that I would research is the seven ancient wonders of the world. I would research this because I am so interested in who made them, when they were made, and how they looked when they were still in good condition.

There are a lot of things that spark my curiosity. One of them is remote control cars. I research what the fastest remote control cars are and then I look up videos on them. Next, I look up modifications you can add to your car to make it faster or be able to go off road. Then, I add those modifications to my car.
I wish I knew more about World War 1. I know a lot about World War 2 (because we studied it in 5th grade) but I do not know anything about World War 1. I want to learn about World War 1 because I think history is very interesting and important to learn about.

  3. One subject that I would research is animals because they are very interesting. We learn something new about them almost every day. This topic sparks my curiosity because there are so many different types of animals. Also, it is cool to know how they live and what they do during all of the different seasons. I wish I knew more about animals because it's so awesome to know how the live and what we can learn from them.

    1. I would also research about animals. I think that there are even more undiscovered animals and things we don’t even know about the animals that everyone knows about. Zoology is a topic that is very interesting, and it will grow forever. It is a topic that there will always be something new to learn, and to discover. That’s why I think animals are interesting.

  4. I want to research animals and their habitats. This is interesting to me because some of the same species have different habitats, so this makes me curious. As human beings we live all around the world, and animals do the same, but animals don't wear coats or tank tops like we do. They were made to live in a certain place in the world, and if they move habitats, they could die. I have already started learning about animals and their habitats, but I hope to learn more about it in the future.

  5. I would like to research how some people got the ideas for some vehicles. It would be cool to learn how someone got the ideas for boats or trains. I also know where they got the idea, and what started it. It is cool to see how these things can work and how they can brake. Also, I would like to study about the creators. That is what I want to study about.

  16. A topic I would love to learn more about is animals from the Ice Age period. I find it so interesting that hundreds of thousands of species became extinct all because of an intense climate change. I’m also fascinated by how much information scientists have acquired about the animals that lived over a million years ago. My interest in this topic started when my family went to the Le Brea Tar Pits in California. This exhibit showed tar pits that long ago, used to be active. Also, there were many fossils that were on display but the coolest thing I saw was scientists actually working on uncovering a gargantuan mammoth tusk right before my eyes! In conclusion, I believe that species from the Ice Age can teach us more about history and the planet that we inhabit.

  17. A topic I would love to research more about is the colonial times. Ever since I was little I loved learning about history. In fourth grade it really happened because we learned about the Civil War. I loved it so much, and I wanted to learn even more about it. This sparks my curiosity because there were so many people who lived without many things we have now. Sometimes I even wish I lived in the colonial times. I wish I knew more about how the didn't die during the summer. They didn't have air conditioning! When I'm outside playing I'm super sweaty and miserable until I came inside, but I want to know what people did in the colonial times.

  20. I think I would like to research how humans work in general. For example, how does the human mind work? Why do we have emotions? How do our five senses work?, and so on. This is interesting because there is so much we don’t about ourselves, and I think it would help be more aware about yourself and your surroundings as well. Also, the human body is still the most advanced thing in the world, so it would be interesting to unlock some of its mysteries.
Learning about the human body is also learning about viruses in your body. There are some cancers and more viruses that have been not yet treated and finding ways to treat these things or at least learn how they work have always been of great interest to me.

  21. Something I would find interesting to research is sea animals. I think creatures down in the ocean floor are fascinating. Even jellyfish, whales, sharks, and all the ocean animals that we all know about are cool. You know, only five percent of the ocean has been explored… so who knows what's out there? I want to find out!

  23. I would love to study the ocean and other bodies of water. Since, we have barely scratched the surface of our oceans and water itself it is a field of research with so much to be found. With diving equipment being rolled out of factories and new designs in equipment we can go deeper and better understand life in the ocean compared to on land. With many species undiscovered anyone can explore and find something new. :)

  31. A topic I am very curious in, and find fun to research would be Science, especially new scientific discoveries. I am always excited to hear about ways people are discovering and creating new things, and wait for some scientific breakthrough or, a slow discovery that takes years to study, but in the end pushes humanity forward. We have come so far in the study of in the last hundred years, I try to imagine what it will be like a hundred years from today! Hoverboards that actually hover and aren’t just a skateboard with weird wheels that you operate by leaning forward? Cures for Diseases we didn’t have before? Drone Pizza Delivery? All of these could be made possible through science.

Peace out, I have no doubt, try another route, plant a sprout, and catch a trout.

  32. One thing that really interests me is Science. In science I really take an interest in the study of how the human mind works. For example if two people where in the same situation how they would both react differently all because there minds process differently. This is also why I take in interest in children's psychology. I love to think how everyone's thought feeling and behavior is all connected. I also like science because the more creative you are the better. 35. One subject that I would like to research more is both of the World Wars. Before my family visited the Normandy beaches which are famously known for being the place where D-Day occurred, I researched this event by reading multiple books about it. Researching D-Day was extremely fun and I learned so much. Although I gathered lots of information about both of the World Wars when I visited Europe, it was only a small fraction of everything that went on in the them. It is such a big subject that there is no limit of knowledge that you can accumulate about it. I also really enjoy learning about very different kinds of wars and all the planning that went on during them. There is so much going on and so many cool memorials to learn about and visit. I am looking forward to learning more about the major wars in the future and hopefully will be able to visit other historic sites.
