Captivating Characters

Dear readers,
Have you read a book where you fell in love with a character, where they came alive? If so, tell us about the character and why you were captivated by them.
I know when I was a student, and even now, I resonated with Matilda. Not only did I love the outlandish characters Roald Dahl created and his quirky, vivid language. I loved that he made the main character a brilliant, independent, strong girl. I remember thinking I wanted to be just like her -- a bookworm and a seeker of knowledge.
So far I have enjoyed reading your blog responses and have noticed your thoughtfulness. Be sure to edit your post making sure titles are capitalized, sentence structure is strong, and word choice is precise. This is 6th grade -- it is time to raise the level of your thinking and writing!
Here are book trailers last year's 6th graders created of their favorite books which you may want to read over the summer. Remember students will recommend a wide variety of books -- different genres, reading levels, and maturity levels. I encourage you and your family to use Common Sense Media and other book reviews to see if the book is appropriate for you. There are many, many options!

  1. Out of all the series and books I have read, The Land of Stories stands above the rest. One reason being the incredible characters I fell in love with from the moment I started reading. The two protagonists, Alex and Conner, are complete opposites, making them incredibly relatable. Alex, a bookworm who advocates the importance of school and learning, often feels the pressure of living up to what everyone thinks she is. Conner is always in the shadow of Alex, causing him to give up on school (falling asleep in class) and focus on shenanigans and jokes. Sometimes, I feel like I can never live up to one of my friends or even my brother. Other times, I just want to forget about the importance of school and just collapse. Alex and Conner are my favorite pair of fictional twins of all time, in part by the way they set an example for my brother and I, but also because I can pick up any Land of Stories book and relate to what they are going through (if I ignore the dragons and battles and whatnot).

  2. I really enjoy reading realistic fiction, because it makes the character or happening seem as if it could be part of your life. I was touched by August in Wonder in summer of 4th grade. August is a boy just like any other, except for his appearance. August is affected by a syndrome that changes his look, but fortunately, it did not change his personality. He never ostracized a friend no matter how they were, he didn't give up, and he was a smart and quick thinker. I took a while to think about the great deal of pressure it had on the parents, and how actual parents were affected by their kids having this syndrome, so it gave me a sense of recognition to learn how difficult it was to live with and around August. I was inspired to be like August, never gave a thought if someone said something mean to him, and I realized how hard it was.

  3. After many years of reading, one of my favorite books ever is What Elephants Know. The main character in this book is Nandu, an orphan living his life with his adopted father, Subba Sahib, in the Thakurdwara elephant stable. He is an eleven year old boy who lives Africa. He considers his favorite elephant, Devi Kali, as his mother. Devi Kali is kind and fierce and will do and will do anything to protect Nandu. Nandu is very adventurous and curious. He loves nature and feels as if he can talk to the elephants in the stable. He wants to know all about how his father found him and the stories of each and every elephant with all the details. He encounters many struggles in his life which includes going to jail, leaving his father to go to a school where he is bullied, and losing a loved one. All through the struggles, he stays strong and pushes through, staying tough as many sad things happen so fast. Their stable is threatened to be taken away and all the workers there to lose their jobs. All through this Nandu stays strong and has the courage to do anything it takes to save the stable. Everything he treasures could be taken away, even his mother, if he doesn’t fight for the things that he loves most. The things that Nandu goes through throughout the story is very sad, but shows you a strong person on the inside who will never give up to fight for the things he loves. This story is a compassionate and sad story that I couldn’t put down. I love Nandu and I highly recommend this books to anyone who loves a good story with amazing animals and strong emotions.

  4. Out of many of the books I have read, I would say that my favorite character is a dog named Ginger. He is from the book Ginger Pye, by Elanor Estes. Ginger is no ordinary dog. He is very intelligent, and has many special abilities. Throughout the book, Ginger saves the Pye family's cat, gets dognapped, and finds his way home. He and his family struggle along the way to find each other, but will stop at nothing. Ginger is a loyal, smart, and interesting character. He also knows tons of tricks. This book was full of so many adventures, and I couldn't put it down! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves realistic fiction, and adventurous books. Plus this book is not only about Ginger. It is also about the Pye family, and their lives. Ginger Pye was one of my favorite books. Ginger is a hero, and he is definitely one of the characters that I fell in love with.

  5. Out of the many books I have read, and all the characters that have come with them, I would say that my favorite character is an acorn named Little Acorn. He is from the book The Oak Inside the Acorn. Now I know what you're thinking,I can’t fall in love with a character that’s only an acorn, but you are very mistaken. This little acorn goes on the most difficult journey any acorn could ever take, growing up into an oak. Throughout this book the Little Acorn shows bravery and kindness no matter where he goes. I fell in love with this character because of his bravery, kindness, and most of all what he says every time he is in every tough position: “Within me is a great oak, just be the tree God made me to be. I really love this quote because it teaches us that God has a special purpose for us , and that he wants us pursue it.Throughout the book this little acorn learns what it takes to become a Big Oak. I find it almost impossible to to not fall in love with such a kindhearted fearless little acorn.

  6. I have read many books throughout my lifetime, but one I could read over over again would be Esperanza Rising. This book was written by Pam Munoz Ryan. It is about the main character, Esperanza, facing many obstacles, but she still displays a hopeful and positive attitude through them all. Her father was killed, there was a fire at their ranch, they had to move out of their ranch, her grandmother received an injury in her ankle, and her mother got Valley Fever. I really don't see how she was that brave and strong to get through these difficult times. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction. This book is such a sweet and emotional story, and I am just so glad I got to read it. In the end of the book it says: "No wonder Esperanza means hope." I really love how this is said because Esperanza is truly such a hopeful person, and will do anything to protect her loved ones. I really loved this book, and I hope whoever reads it next will love it too.

  7. Just this summer I started reading the book The Girl who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill, and it is impossible to put down. The character I am captivated by in this book is the main character Luna. Luna is a young girl who lives in the city of Protectorate were every year the youngest baby is taken into the woods as a sacrifice to the believed very evil, and wicked witch named Xan. Luna is little over a month old when she is taken to the woods as the sacrifice and later discovered by the presumed evil witch Xan. Young Luna then discovers that Xan believes that the people of Protectorate abandon a baby in the forest every year for no reason. Then when Xan accidentally feeds Luna moonlight instead of starlight, Luna is discovered with a great deal of magic within her skin which forces Xan to take Luna in as her own. Luna’s memory is soon erased of her own powers and convinces her that she is nothing but normal until danger strikes. I am captivated by this character because of her kindness, creativity, and curiosity to find even the smallest trace to what the word magic means. I look up to this character because she is fun, brave, and is never willing to give up on what she believes in. There is a quote by Walt Disney that states “ We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing knew things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” I think this quote fits Luna so well because of her never ending curiosity to find who she really is. This is the character I am captivated by and recommend this book to anyone who likes an epic and thrilling tale about a girl who has the power to change the world.

  9. As a reader, I try to expand my variety of genres that I read but out of all the books I have read, The Hungers Games has been one of my favorites. Out of all of the characters in the books, my favorite is Prim. She is the ultimate example of a strong women who perseveres. She has had her sister fight to the death with people from all over, with a tiny chance of actually winning or surviving but yet she stayed strong and helped her mother in the healing business, and kept up with the hope that her sister would be alright. In the second book, Prim has to go through that all again when Katniss has to go back to fight. What does she do though, she stays strong gets better and more skilled in being a doctor and holds on to the hope that her sister will be alright. prim is a true role model standing up for what she believes in and keeps going in even the toughest of situations like in the last book where her town is attacked and she has to go to an underground base to help with the injured. After everything that has happened, Prim stays strong and is willing to help out those in need and do what ever she can to make things right. After reading the Hunger Games books I-3, Prim is definitely my favorite character and a definite role model to many people.

  10. Out of all the books I have read, when I read the book Unwanteds I was amazed by the main character Alex. He teaches you that the sky’s the limit, and a big imagination can take you a long way. His creativity really inspires me to do something to nurture my creativity because in life, it’s good if you have the ability to think outside the box. In classes, he would always come up with something new, or make something great even better. He also shows that a brotherly bond can’t be broken, and that is great to know because I have a little brother. He is the kind of person who perseveres, and tries even though he knows he is going to fail. He is a great leader, and he really shows you the meaning of teamwork. He and his friends are great alone, but together they are unbeatable problem solvers. When the army of Quill finds them, Alex and his friends were side by side helping each other out. When one of them would get injured, they would rush him to the hospital wing. That is how Alex from the Unwanteds has touched me as a reader.

  11. As a reader, I have always been amazed by Alex the character in Land Of Stories. She is always trying to put herself before others. When her family member was dying, all she wanted to do was stay there and help her. When her brother is away, she always try to see if he is ok. She also has a twin brother, who is also like her. He also cares about everyone, just like Alex. When an evil woman took Alex's mom, Alex tried her hardest to save her mom and she did. Everyone who was evil, was defeated by Alex. She has always touched me as a reader.

  12. Out of all the books I have read, The Books of Beginning series has been one of the best books I have read. In this series there is a girl named Kate who has a brother and a sister. When Kate was only about 10 years old her parents were taken away. Since then she has had to take care of her brother and sister and has to keep them safe. There been many ups and downs, but she still will do anything to keep her brother and sister safe. She has shown braveness throughout the series, by standing up to bad people and risking her life for her brother and sister. There has never been a time where she has not shown leadership towards her brother and sister. This character has set a great example for me and has been an irresistible character.

  13. As a reader, I have finished many excellent and exciting reads, but Wolf Hollow is one of the best. I just read it last week, and the main character, Annabelle McBride, is one to admire. Although her family has always looked out for Toby, the World War One veteran who is homeless, they don't really know him, and most people sees him as dangerous. But when the town accuses Toby of doing something terrible, Annabelle knows it can't be him. However, the evidence is stacked hard against him, but all through the story, Annabelle risks everything to protect him, even going so far as to hide him in her barn. She helps him get past fears, face the past, and even save his enemy's life! When things got tough, Annabelle stayed with him all the way, and without her, the truth never would've been revealed. Annabelle is a shining example of standing up for who you believe in, and really captivated me and drew me into the story.

  14. One of my favorite books I've read is a book called Finding Serendipity. A girl named Tuesday is very inspirational to me. She is always hungry for an adventure, and needs the truth about everything. She loves her dog and doesn't do anything without him. She loves to read. Especially her mom's books. She is always curious about everything. Her curiosity takes her places that she could never imagine. She has to keep the secret that her mom is a famous author in disguise. She loves to make up little poems that rhyme. She is really inspirational and I have been thinking about that book ever since I've finished it

  15. This summer I read the book Fish In A Tree. It is about a girl named Ally who is overcoming a learning disability. I love this character because she is so hard working even if it gets rough. This character inspires me to be the best I can be. I also love this character because she is always there for her friends and they are always there for her. I love how they all look up to each other for help and guidance. Ally's friends also always support each other and looking out for one another. I also love how Ally realizes that when you have something to overcome does not not mean that you are dumb and stupid, and even though she has a learning disability she does not hold back! " If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its life believing it is stupid." (Quoted from the book)

  16. I have read plenty of books through my time as a reader but, the character that stands out the most out of all of these books is Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger games series. The story of her life was very sad after her dad had died her mom was almost immobile in shock. So Katniss and sometimes her sister have to provide for their family. Katniss is a skilled ranged hunter her favorite thing to do being hunting. Her dad used to take her in to the woods beyond district 11 often to hunt. He was also very skilled. Then, the time of year came around where they would draw the participants for the year's Hunger Games. It was shocking when Prim her sister was picked in her first year of eligibility. So Katniss volunteered as tribute and let her sister stay. This shows the kind of person she is, always looking out for her family. She makes it to the arena now truly ready. She makes an alliance with a girl named Rue and they stay together and take out one player. Then, soon Rue gets hit with a spear and dies. Katniss finds a bow that someone she killed had. She and her friend from her district manage to hunt down all of the other participants and kill them. Showing her promise that she made to Rue to win. She has true compassion and great character I couldn't stop reading this book.

  17. I have read lots of books with a variety of different types of characters, but one character that really stands out to me is Seth from Fable haven. Fable haven is a five book series that is full of amazing characters. Throughout the series Seth is never scared to do anything. He is very adventurous, and is not scared to do anything. He gets stuck in lots of tough situations, but always finds the solutions. Seth has a sister, and he will always do everything he can to protect her on the crazy adventures they seek all the time. Seth is the kind of character that makes you want to continue reading the book. While I was reading this series, I enjoyed it so much, because Seth always found away to help someone. Sometimes while on a mission Seth didn't always take it too serious. Seth also liked to have some fun. After reading this series Seth in my opinion, can inspire the people who read it in many ways. For example, he always has the courage to take on any challenge. And I know if I had to be like any character, it would be like Seth.

  18. I have read many unique series but they all have one thing in common, great characters. One character that stood out to me was Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. Throughout this series, Hermione always provides as a source of knowledge and reason for those who lack their own. She is fearless in the face of danger and she never turns down a challenge. No matter what calamity befalls her and her friends, she is always resourceful and loyal, ready to risk her self to ensure her friends safety. Even though she deals with many challenges including her friends, her beliefs and even Voldemort, through it all, she remains calm, cool and collected. The way that J.K. Rowling describes Hermione makes her presence vivid and almost real to the reader therefore, making her more relatable. Hermione is definitely someone to look up to and she is most definitely my favorite literary heroine.

  19. One of my favorite book series is Percy Jackson. My favorite character in the Percy Jackson series is Annabeth Chase. She is my favorite character because she is so intelligent and provides great information and ideas throughout the books. She is also very brave and will not give up. She is very intelligent because she always has a game plan to get out of tough situations. To get out of the tough situations she tries to evaluate the situation and how she can use her skills to help in ways that are creative, and that I would not think about doing. She is very brave because she has to fight many strange creatures that are very tough and do not give up easily. Annabeth also gives great advice to help Percy with his training and provides guidance to him when he is making important decisions during the quests. She is a strong person who is very respected. That is why my favorite character is Annabeth.

  20. One of my absolute without a doubt favorite character is Dobby from the Harry Potter series written by J.K. Rowling. Dobby is an house elf which is basically a servant for a wizard family. One night Harry Potter meets Dobby and let me tell you he is the cutest little thing. I could not put the book down once Dobby came into the picture. I love this character because he is protecting Harry Potter all out throughout the book. He would do anything to protect Harry Potter who isn’t even his master. I love this character so much because he is so loyal and you just want to be his friend. Even though Dobby is still a servant, he is always happy and once other people to be happy.

  21. I love many books, there are so many to choose from but one I love so so much is… Sisters by Raina Telgemeier. Raina Telgemeier is such a great author and when I get one of her books in my hands I just can’t put it down! But especially with Sisters. Sisters is a story about to sisters named Raina and Amara. I love the character Raina in this story because she has this annoying little sister who is always trying to be a winner over Raina. Amazingly Raina always fights through it. To me she is a great role model. My favorite part is when Amara and Raina are stuck in a van and a snake comes slithering in the van but the two sisters work together to get the snake out of sight and make sure that the girls are safe from the snake. But when you work together in this book ANYTHING is possible!

  22. My favorite book is Amulet by a mile for many reasons, but this one character is by far my favorite, Leon. The reason he is my favorite because his backstory is very amazing, and he is a fox that fights with swords. He also, trains the main character Emily to fight the evil elf army. That is why Leon is my favorite character in any book I have read.

  23. Choosing a favorite book is hard, but if I had to choose one it would be Percy Jackson. I like this book because of precy. The reason I like Percy is that he is kind to his friends Annabeth and Grover, and he is brave when he does a task. When Percy finds out that he is the so poseidon he does not loose his cool and brags ar gets scared. That is why I like the character Percy Jackson.

  24. My favorite book is the Amulet. My favorite character is Vigo for many reasons. One he a very wise and cool person. He also helps the main character, Emily train and become a stronger and wiser stonekeeper, just like Leon did before Vigo found them. He also is very confident and caring. That is Vigo is my favoite character out of all the books I have ever read.

  26. Recently I began reading the first book of the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins and it is absolutely amazing. The author has created many strong characters and I immediately fell in love with them. The writer’s craft that Suzanne Collins used paints a clear picture in my mind and it lets me as a reader feel closer to the story. For example, instead of saying that Clove chose a knife with a sharp blade, she would say that the blade was cruel and curved. This makes me terrified for what might happen to Katniss. It feels like I am right there with her, not just laying in bed reading a book. If I had to choose my favorite characters, I would pick Katniss and Prim Everdeen. These sisters are perfect examples of strong, resilient, and determined women. Katniss is responsible for feeding her mother and Prim everyday before the games start. She hunts, knowing that she isn’t supposed to, so that she can spend time with Gale and feed her family. Prim has to stay strong and help her mother knowing that her sister could die at any second. Katniss willingly took Prim’s place in the Games because she didn’t want to lose her. She knowingly sacrificed her life. All of these examples from the first book of the Hunger Games are so inspirational and they prove how incredible Prim and Katniss are. I am excited to finish the series!

  27. I have read many books in my lifetime, but one book called Charlotte’s Web has been one of my favorites since I was little. My favorite character from that book is Charlotte, a spider that lives in the top corner of a barn above a small pig. She has the characteristics of a wonderful friend towards almost a total stranger. In the story there is a pig that lives right below her, Wilbur, and he feels unsure of himself. She is always building him up instead of tearing him down. She makes him feel like he is not useless, instead, usefull. Also, she is a very good secret keeper. She keeps all of Wilbur’s secrets. Wilbur’s family leaves him at the barn after he had grown up too much to stay in their house. The little girl who was originally his owner kept visiting him every day, before and after school. As the little girl grew up, she stoped coming to see Wilbur. This makes Wilbur feel more and more lonely. One day there was a random voice that was talking to him. He soon found out that it was a spider, named Charlotte, that lived in the corner of the barn right above him. They soon became friends, and Wilbur told Charlotte everything! Charlotte was the best listener and the best comforter to Wilbur whenever he was feeling down. One day Charlotte spun a web in the barn doorway that said “Radiant Pig”. She did this all for Wilbur to boost his self confidence. Soon Wilbur became famous, and people from all over the world came to see this spider’s web that changed about every day saying a new word that described this magnificent pig. Wilbur was so happy that he didn’t know what to do with himself! All thanks to Charlotte! I loved how Charlotte went out of her way to do something kind for someone else even when she didn’t have to. She is an inspiring character, and I would love to be exactly like her one day!

  28. I have read a lot of books but there is one I like named a series of unfortunate events. My favorite character is actually the bad guy named Count Olaf. The reason I like Count Olaf is that he is so funny and he can make and act so many different people. The reason he is the bad guy is because he is trying to steal a girl name Violet's money (Violet came from a rich family). The reason why Violet is not with her parents is because there house caught fire while her parents were still inside. Violet has a brother named Clouse and a sister named Sunny. My favorite Count Olaf moment was when he dressed up as a women that works for and evil dentist and Olaf had a weird look because he is a man. That is why Count Olaf is my favorite character in the series of unfortunate events.

  29. When I was little I loved the series Dork Diaries. My favorite character in the book was Nikki. Whenever a new book would come out, I would beg my mom to take me to the book store to buy it. I have always loved that book because I can imagine her being a real person. Nikki is a bookworm and she always has to take care of her bossy sister. She is also having to listen to this mean girl Mackenzie. Mackenzie is always telling Nikki what to but she never listens to her. I love how Nikki doesn't listen to mean girls, and is so mature.

  31. I love the main character in The Unwanteds, Alex. What I really like about him is he never gives up even if he wants to give up or he doesn’t think he can do it. I the book he goes through a lot of hard situations like at a very young age he has to be learn to be the leader of Artime and he doesn’t to do it. Then suddenly the leader dies and Alex has to become the leader. He has to do it because he is the only one that was taught how the be the leader. He's willing to sacrifice and put his life on the line time after time for the people he loves. he is a fearless character in the book and is relentless at times to rescue and save others. 33. There haven’t been too many instances where I really, truly connected with a character. Most of the time I find myself admiring certain traits of the character, because I lack those qualities, and admire someone (Even if they are fictional) that can hold up a trait that I admire. Usually, when I really connect with a character, it is because his or her thoughts I can relate to, thoughts I have actually had before. I understand quite a few people have already said Percy Jackson, but I have to write this because pretty much the entirety of when I read the series, was me relating to Percy. Even though I’m not brave, or courageous, I can still relate to some thoughts and emotions he feels, and I can also share some of the awkward situations he has found himself in. I do understand that many others have said Percy, but hey, Rick Riordan is a good author.

    Sincerely, Noah S

  34. One of my favorite out of many books is Iggie's House by Judy Blume. It is about this girl named Iggie who moves to Tokyo. And now Whinnie, her best friend is alone on Grove Street, cracking her gum as loud as she can and wonders how she is going to make it through the summer. Then the Garbers. She sees a moving truck through her bay window backing up into Iggie's old house and Winnie is thrilled. But the Garbers are a different race then Winnie is, and that is how the trouble starts. In this book I think I am most connected to the youngest Garber child, Tina. She is serious but also know how to have fun and is energetic. Tina also loves to play outside and always wants to be a part of something, she is never board. All the other characters are great but I like Tina most.

  35. I really love that character Ari from the book Paper Things by Jennifer Richard Jacobson. This is a story about a girl whose mother died four years ago and had two dying wishes. For Ari’s older brother and her to always be together and for Ari to go to the middle school she went to; Carter.
When her older brother wanted to move out from their guardians home, Ari knew she had to come. The only problem is they don’t have any place to move. They shift from home to home all while Ari is dealing with problems at school that makes us struggle with keeping up with school and friendship problems all while being homeless. This story opens up homelessness in a whole different light that most of us have never looked at it. What I love about this story and Ari is that it is told with such authenticity that it makes it so real and so imaginable that it can almost seem like you're living vicariously through Ari.

  36. My favorite series is Harry Potter, so obviously, one of the characters in the series is one that I love. Throughout the series, Harry Potter, though very smart, needs help and knowledge. One of his main sources of knowledge is Hermione and Ron, but when all else fails, he relies on the one and only Dumbledore. I love this character for many reasons, but one is his knowledge. He always has an answer to everything that is asked from him and is practically a genius. He makes lots of good choices and knows what to in every situation even if it is hard. It is my goal to be as knowledgeable as him one day and know what to do in almost every situation that comes to me in my life. Dumbledore is not in the last book in the series due to dying in the book before, but he had a plan before he died to help Harry Potter in the last book. Dumbledore had a plan and was one step ahead of everyone, which makes him a very inspiring character. Dumbledore was the head of Hogwarts, which is the wizarding school that Harry Potter was sent to. He was chosen to be the head of Hogwarts for many reasons, but one of them is that he has a good heart. He demonstrates this throughout the whole series with unselfish actions and sacrificing things that were dear to him such as his role as the headmaster and his life. One of the best parts of Dumbledore was that he was flawed. Transgressions of the past shaped Dumbledore into the amazing person that he was. To me, a perfect character is not the best one. These are all the reasons why I love Dumbledore.

The witches cottage was empty until one day a family arrives. The story is about how Twig makes friends with this family and they try to release the curse on her family. 38. The character I like is Odysseus in the Odyessey by Homer. The story is about Odysseus who is smart and strong. He has to leave his wife and kid to go fight in the Trojan war. He survived with most of his army and starts to head back to Ithaca. He was faced with many challenges. Like when he was forced to make the decision either a whirl pool that would destroy the whole ship or a monster with six hungry heads. The reason that I like Odysseus is because he is patient. He struggled hard challenges like when he slowly die. He also spent twenty long years out at sea trying to get home to his wife and kid. For all his hard ships I respect his patience and bravery.

  39. A character that I like is Carter from a book called the The Red Pyramid. I like Carter because he is brave and knowledgeable. This helps his sister and his friends when they are in tough situations on their adventures. Without Carter, they may not have been able to finish the adventure because he put himself in danger in order for them move ahead. This is why I like Carter.

  40. The character that I like is Brian Robeson from hatchet. His parents had gotten divorced, so he was going to go see his dad. Before he had gotten on to the plane his mom gave him a hatchet. He was on the plane when it jerked and knocked out both of the pilots. The plane had crashed into a small pond where everyone died except for Brian. He had to survive in the wilderness for about a week with only his clothes and the hatchet. He inspired me because he had to persevere even when he had no food for a whole day. He inspires me to persevere when times our tough.

    1. I agree with you Hutton that he had to really persevere even though he was stranded on a island by himself. Brian Robeson inspires me in so many ways, but manly to stay strong and to not quit on yourself.

  41. I really like the character Harry Potter from his book series. His parents got killed by an evil wizard and was forced to live with his only relatives left, The Vernons. He is a very daring and curious boy that is willing to do anything. All of the adventures that he goes on are so cool, and his best friends Hermionie Granger and Aron Weasley are always right by his side. No matter a test or a big task they always help each other out. This is why I really like the character Harry Potter.

  42. I love Bryan Robeson from hatchet. On the way to see his dad because his parents got divorced. On the way to his plane his mom gave him a hatchet for his tool belt. On the way to see his dad, his plane crashed into a forest and he survived. unfortunately, he had to survive in the wild for about a week with only himself and the hatchet that his mom gave him. He inspired me to have bravery because he lived in a forest for about a week and also he taught me how to survive in the wild forest by having a confident attitude after his plane crashed.

  45. One book character that I loved was a man named Louie Zamperini, from Unbroken. He is a role model in every way possible. Throughout the book he shows physical and incredible mental strength. What makes me love him the most was how he could grow up a poor boy and dream big enough to become an olympic runner. It also amazed me how he could go from not knowing God at all to being completely engulfed in faith in under a year. Those are the reasons that Louie Zamperini is one of my favorite book characters.

  46. As a student I have read a lot of books and have been introduced to a lot of characters. In fourth grade we got to study a person of our choice and I picked Michael Phelps. The reason I picked Michael Phelps is because I m a swimmer and I look up to him. Phelps is an Olympic swimmer and he has won the most gold medals at the Olympics ever. The reason I look up to him is because he is such a hard worker and is very determined. I hope to be able to make it to the Olympics some day (and I would not mind breaking some of his records!).

  47. When we did a book club in 5th grade, our group decided to read the book Savy. At first I didn't like the book but as I go further into it I got more interested. I loved this character because she was always determined, she never lost focus. The author described her so well I felt as if I was in the book with her. also, her emotions were so real. When she figured out that she had a power she learned that was only one way she was special, so she shouldn't act like she's better than everyone else just because she can read their mind.

  48. I love researching space and history. Space is cool because there are so many things that nobody has even discovered yet. In history, it's people I like learning about because they are so interesting.

  49. The character I really like is Kenny from The Watson's Go To Birmingham. I like him because he's super smart, and even though his brother and friends tease him all the time, he gets them back in different ways. He's nice and always loves his family no matter what.

  50. I know this sounds odd, but out of all the books I have read, Voldemort, from "Harry Potter" is my favorite character. I feel he is mysterious because at times he's extremely mad at Harry and violent but then he's also patient and waits for his revenge. This keeps me excited and wondering what's going to happen next. I think Voldemort challenges a reader to think about good and evil. He makes me want to jump into the novel and try and stop him from doing evil things. Although Voldemort is bad, he is one of my favorite characters.
