Summer Reading Books

Dear readers,

Last week I read a book called Lab Girl by Hope Jahren. It is a memoir based on Jahren's experience as a scientist who studies trees and plants. While it may not sound exciting, she is an excellent writer and storyteller who made me appreciate the hard work it takes to be a scientist and the importance of this work as it relates to our environment. I came across this book because the book club at Parnassus, a locally owned and operated bookstore in Nashville, was reading it and I often read the books they suggest and attend the meetings with my mom. Overall I enjoyed Lab Girl because it was not a book I would typically pick up given I do not often read about science and nonfiction, but given it was a memoir, it was nonfiction hidden in a story.

What book have you read this summer that you really enjoyed? Tell us the title, a few sentences to summarize the book, and a few sentences to explain why you liked it.

Happy reading!
Ms. Sikes

  1. I read a book called I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World.
It is about a girl named Malala Yousafzai who grew up in a world called Swat Valley in Pakistan
where most women only had education up to 10 years of age if any and all they were treated good for was cooking and cleaning. When she was growing up, there was a terrorist group called the Taliban who vowed to shoot her because she was standing up for the right of girl’s education. She was shot and just barely made it out alive. When she was growing up, most women covered their heads and faces, but Malala didn’t. She knew that there was nothing to be ashamed being a women and all. She stood up nice and tall for all the world to see. She is the youngest person to ever win a nobel peace prize in the entire world at at 17 years old. This is an autobiography of Malala Yousafzai and her story. At first, I didn’t think I would be all that into it because I don’t really read these types of books, but it really empowered me as a person and it opened my eyes to places like these where women aren’t fairly valued to men even to this day. It showed me how a girl of my age can make an impact that spreads to the entire world. Now I am reading Beneath the Surface: My Story by Michael Phelps. It is another really good autobiography that tells an amazing story.

    1. That was a great summary! I think I am going to read Malala later this summer! You wrote a great summary of the book! I love how brave she is and that she kept persevering no matter what. Her story really shows you that you can change the world no matter how young you are. Great Job Anaya!

    2. I also read I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World. I liked this book because it really inspired me to stand up for what I think is right, and to never be ashamed of who you are because God made everybody equal. I hope I can be as brave as Malala. I would recommend this book to anybody.

  2. At the beginning of June I read Paper Things by Jennifer Richard Jacobson. At first, I was hesitant about reading it because it was about a girl who couch surfs (sleeps on different people's couches each night). I thought that I would not enjoy reading about someone who was practically homeless. But, when a graduated sixth grader recommended it to me, I decided to give it a try. Paper Things is about a girl named Ari who has to move in with one of her mother's best friends growing up after her mother died when she was seven. Four years later, when her brother turns 18, he decides he and Ari are moving out. He promises their guardian that he will have an apartment for them in two weeks or less, but after a month and a half, he still has no luck. Meanwhile, Ari is struggling in school because of her situation (which she has told nobody about), and her best friend has started hanging out with other girls. Eventually, Ari has to make decision between the two dying wishes of her mother, to stay with her brother or move back in with her guardian so she can get into Carter, the school for gifted children. I really enjoyed this book because of the message I took away from it - do not let anyone else choose where you go but you, and not to let anyone else make your decisions for you. The other message I found very moving was that you do not have to physically be in the same room of apartment as someone to stick with them, you just need to remember them and stay in touch. Over all, Paper Things is my favorite summer reading book so far.

  3. At the very beginning of the year I read, Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children By Ransom Riggs. It takes place in modern-day Florida, following a teen named Jacob, who has never really felt like he fits in. Following the death of his mysterious Grandfather, Jacob decides to visit the place where his Grandfather lived as a boy during World War 2, (Allegedly hiding from the Germans, as he and Jacob are Jewish) But as Jacob travels back to the eerie wreck of a house where his deceased grandfather used to live, he discovers that other children lived there, too. And they may still be alive.
I loved this book, because I thought the plot line was interesting, and intriguing. Though, there were some parts where I thought that the author lacked terrific storytelling, the plot line would make of for parts with lacking storytelling. The book definitely kept me intrigued, and I am currently reading the second installment in the series.

    Sincerely, Noah S

  4. At the very beginning of June I finished the third book of the Land of Stories series, written my Chris Colfer. This series contains a lot of fantasy and adventure. The main characters are Alex and Conner Bailey. No one had told them but there was another world that contained all the fairytale characters their grandmother had read to them about. In a quick jump into the portal that lead them into the fairytale world they were souronded by kings and queens of all the most famous kingdoms. Also there was another secret, their grandmother was the Fairy Godmother.
In the third book though there was a war going on against the Fairytale Kingdom, led by a French army. However, Alex had decided to stay in the Fairytale world and Conner decided to go back home. Alex is worried though after things started to get rough, and their grandmother had fallen ill. Luckily, she was able to communicate with Conner through a tiny piece of chipped mirror. Conner had to get through the portal to help his sister to win the war. There were many obstacles they had to face, but they were able to get through them all. They had even won the war! Unfortunately, their grandmother could not hold it in too much longer, and passed away. However, Alex was next in line as the Fairy Godmother. She still had much to learn, but had truly learned from the best. I loved this book so much! It was sad, but showed me that you can still work together to overcome the struggles in life. I really enjoyed this book.

  5. I am currently reading the incredible story of Louie Zamperini, in a novel by the name of Unbroken. This book is a story of how Louie went from a rebellious boy with little structure in his life, to an Olympic miler. That is only the beginning, when the 1940 Olympics are canceled Louie gets drafted into the military. In his training he is assigned to a B-24 as the bombardier. The B-24 was known as the "flying coffin", because of its constant threat of a failing engine. Louie would then go on to make some friends, and get assigned to a bombing mission. While completing his first mission he later crashed into the ocean and lived on a raft as castaway. He then was discovered by an enemy plane. Then the survivors were take captive and sent to a POW camp. Louie persevered and lived through what I could not even imagine. I love this book because it keeps me on the edge of my seat. With a continuously changing plot it is impossible to find yourself bored while reading this book.

  6. In the beginning of the summer, I read Fablehaven: Grip of the Shadow Plague by Brandon Mull. It's the third book in the Fablehaven series. It's about how the main characters, (Kendra and her younger brother Seth) find their grandparents secret magical creature preserve, being infected by a plague that turns creatures dark and humans into shadows. Kendra and her brother mist figure out how to stop it and possibly recover a second out of 2 artifacts hidden among the preserve. since it was the third book, the charters really start to grow and you really get to know who they are becoming which was something I really enjoyed reading. The book really kept me on the edge of my seat and it didn't get boring or really slow at parts. I am currently reading the 4th book in the series because after reading the third, I have to know what happens next. I strongly suggest this series to fantasy readers because am really enjoying it.

  7. I just read The Honest Truth while at summer camp. This is an amazing story about a boy who wants to climb a mountain with his dog, even if it is the last thing he does. Mark has cancer, but he already beat it a few years ago. When it comes back, he decides to run away with Beau, his faithful pup, to climb Mount Rainer. While Remembering his grandfather's dying words that he said while in the hospital: "I don't want to die like this," his family is scrambling to find him, while his best friend, Jesse, holds the secret of where Mark is going, but struggles to decide what to do with it. With a fast paced plot and riveting story, this is one of the best realistic fiction books you will ever read. I really liked it because it showed both sides of the story, with Mark and his family. It also was really realistic, and you can believe that it could actually happen. I recommend it for people looking for a good new non-stop, action packed, sad and sobering story. A twist on the classic 'boy and his dog v.s. nature,' I am looking forward to reading the other books by this author.

  9. I am currently reading The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay, the third (and last) book in The Hunger Games series. The book is about a 17 year old girl named Katniss Everdeen, who has survived one hunger games and just escaped another one. She and two other competitors are taken to district 13, (a war ruined district in Panem, the country that they live in) right after she escapes her second hunger games, and is taken to a hidden under ground rebel base. While in district 13, she slowly recovers from The Hunger Games and even helps fight in the rebellion. Then the district is then bombed on the surface, and everyone is forced to stay deep under ground. This is as far as I've gotten in the book, but I know there will be more exciting parts later in the book. I like this book because it includes some real objects, but also some made up objects (like hovercrafts and other futuristic technologies) and made up animals, that are fun to learn about. I also like the plot changes, the plot is constantly changing, so the book is rarely slow. One last thing I like about the book is that it is a book in a series, I love reading series' because you can follow the characters and really get to know them better than if they were in just one book.

  10. This summer I read a book called The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan. The main characters are a brother and sister named Carter and Sadie. You would never expect that they are brother and sister because they are complete opposites. When they were little, their mother dies. After she dies, they were separated. Carter went with his dad to travel the world. Sadie was sent to live with her grandparents. One day a year Sadie gets to see her dad. While she was with him, he brought them to a museum where he summoned a god. Her dad did not know that monsters might come with it. The god, named Set, captured their dad. Their uncle took them so they would be safe. Once at his house, he tells Carter and Sadie that they are capable of doing magic. One day while their uncle goes out, two monsters break into the house. Just when Carter and Sadie think they are doomed, Sadie's cat, Muffin, became a goddess and defeated the monsters allowing them to escape. Carter and Sadie met a girl who said that she was from the magic council and she had orders to bring them in so they could learn to use magic. When there, they realize they have to save their dad. The goddess tells them that there are gods inside of them that give them more power. In a vision, Carter has seen that Set is planning to take over the world. They have to get to the land of the Dead to defeat Set. I like this book because it is action packed and makes me want to keep reading so I know what happens next. Also, it gives good details about what is happening so it is easy for me to envision what the scene would look like. Finally, it has a good story line that is not boring. This is a good book that I think others should read.

  12. This summer I read a book called The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne. It takes place in Germany in 1941 and the main character is this nine year old boy named Bruno, and his father is a powerful Nazi soldier. His father gets promoted, so Bruno and his family and servants have to move to a place called Out-with. Out-with is nowhere near civilization, but it is right by a concentration camp. Bruno loves to explore, so in a place like Out-with, he had nowhere to explore. Bruno and his family have to cope with not being able to interact with many people. Bruno would always wonder about what the concentration camp was, and he would ask his older sister Gretel, who the people in the striped pajamas were. One day Bruno goes out and meets, and starts talking to a boy in a concentration camp each day, and the story spikes from there. I enjoyed this book because I have always been interested in WW2 and the whole concentration camps part of it. The book is great and I really enjoyed it and all the surprises it would show me. I loved the book, and I am glad I read it.

  14. This summer I started reading the book The Boy on the Wooden Box. This auto biography tells about a young Jewish boy named Leon Leyson, and his sad but thrilling tale as a ten year old in the holocaust. Leon was lucky enough to survive the holocaust because of one of history's bravest heroes… Oskar Schindler. I like this book because it tells about how much a family can come together in the worst of times to just survive the next day, and how a hero can save over 1,200 lives while risking his own.

Lastly, I like this book because every chapter ends of a cliff hanger so I just want to keep reading. This book takes place in a campground. It is about 6 best friends and the weird things they do to try to keep their job as camp counselors. 18. One book that I loved reading this summer was The Girl Who Drank The Moon by Kelly Barnhill. It is about a village that thinks that they have to sacrifice a baby so the witch does not attack their village. One year, the witch takes the baby and accidentally feeds the sacrificed child with moonlight instead of starlight, filling her up with magic in every single inch of her body. The witch thinks that she will be dangerous so the witch takes her in as her own and names her Luna. As Luna grows up, she starts to realize who she really is. She has to go through many troubles as people in her life are fading and people are in trouble. It’s a heartfelt story with loving friends and family to life saving moments. 19. The first book I read was the maze runner by James Dashner. The main character is Thomas and he has a lot of friends in the maze. In the beginning Thomas is in a box and he is scared out of his mind. All of a sudden the box top opens and he sees boys outside of the box and they are all looking at Thomas. Then a boy jumps into the box and helps Thomas up and out of the box. Next he sees boys staring at him and few were laughing. So Thomas burst through the crowd and starts to run, but Thomas hears something strange the boy are all cheering for Thomas not saiding "quickly go after him". Then Thomas just falls on the ground and then the boys come after him. Then the boy that got him out of the box says "I greeny I'm Newt and I thought you could be a runner and welcome to the maze." At that moment Thomas got a little confused, maze and greeny, and runner what does that even mean. Thomas' head was spinning in circles and all the boy told him he could have three days off from doing work. So he went straight to bed and went out like a light.
A day latter Thomas went exploring the place they called the glade and it was getting late in the day and he sees a giant opening in the walls. So Thomas walked over there and a young boy came behind him and he said "Hi my name is Chuck and if
I were you I would not go over there because those wall are about to shut." Then Thomas looked confused " the walls are about to shut," as he thought to himself, but Thomas did not care what Chuck said so he walked closer to the wall. Then Out of now were a boy just pushes Thomas and says never go next to the walls this late at night. You got all that greeny!" He yelled. Then Thomas said " why can't I go out th-," but before Thomas could finish his sentence there was a loud and scary screech and then the walls were closing to the entrance of the maze. When the walls completely closed the boy that pushed Thomas said "hi I am Gally but next time you do that I am letting you leave."
I loved this book I read at My camp, Camp Lany I stayed up at night reading this book. I suggest this book to people that like sad and happy endings, a scary monsters named Grever, is ok with dramatic stuff, and ok letting maybe your favorite character get killed. It is a really good book and I rate it four in a half out of five stars.

I have never really been a fan of that show, but since that book I am actually a big fan. In this book, she tells us how she deals with her sister Mackenzie and what its like being on tv. Maddie explains the hard work she put into her rise to stardom and how she kept her balance along the way. She answers many questions that many people have wondered about. I recommend this book to readers who love reading about non-fiction and people who love reading about celebrities.

  39. I have read many books this summer, but one that really keeps the reader on edge and captivates him or her with outstanding literature is Life of Pi. This book is written by Yann Martel and shows a story of hope, courage, and resilience. The main character Pi, (or Piscine) is moving from India to Canada with his family and bringing many different types of animals from their zoo to sell in America. They are traveling by sea in the Tsimtsum, a Japanese freighter and on one night, their boat sinks along with more than fifty animals. Pi manages to escape in a lifeboat with a hyena and a zebra, but sadly there were no survivors. Eventually, Pi discovers that a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker was on the boat with him. Richard Parker killed the other animals but Pi managed to build a raft to escape the tigers rampage. Throughout the book, Pi`s religious beliefs and strong character keeps him alive and thriving as he tries to survive with his few resources. Pi decides to instead of kill the tiger, to help it. Together, they face the harsh ocean and develop a strong bond. This is an amazing book and I hope I find more like it in the future.

  40. One book that I have read over the summer that I really enjoyed is called Finding Serendipity by Angela Banks. At first, I was a little skeptical because it was fantasy and those aren’t exactly my favorite. However, I still chose to give it a shot. I am so glad that I did this because it was very entertaining and different from anything I had ever read before. It is about a young girl named Tuesday McGillycuddy who’s mother is the author of the famous Vivienne Small series. Tuesday works hard to keep the secret everyday. One night when her mother, Serendipity Smith, is about to finish the final book of the Vivienne Small series, Tuesday notices that her mom has been awfully quiet. So, she decides to take a peek inside her mother’s workspace. She quickly notices that Serendipity is not in her desk and she has vanished. On a quest to find her mother, Tuesday and her dog Baxterr are transported to a different world where they encounter thrilling adventures. I am sure that anyone who reads this book will absolutely love it

  43. Currently I am reading "Funny Girl". This book is about a bunch of different girls who have written funny stories about their lives. This like a memoir because the authors are sharing trues stories about themselves. Each chapter has a new story and author. My favorite is the story about the girl who had to visit her grandma's oil farm on a road trip. It was hysterical because the grandma had a perm and all she cared was about her hair. At one point in the story a random man asked the grandma to marry him because he loved her hair! I really enjoyed this book because it made me laugh a bunch and it was about real people and their funny tales.

It turns out the person who makes the games was against the capitol and is part of a resistance. So he picks her up and a couple other people in a hovercraft and that is how book two ends. She then learned how to surf again and get back into the competitions. I enjoyed the book because it is about how she had faith through the whole thing. Also, it's about how you can follow your dreams even if you have something holding you back. Bethany inspired me.

  46. I read a very interesting book this summer. I really enjoyed this book. I read
Soul Surfer an autobiography by Bethany Hamilton. I have been watching her movie since I was a little girl! But this summer was the first time I read her book. It was about this girl who's life was surfing until one day she and her best friend Alana Blanchard went surfing. They were laying on their surfboards in the water when Bethany's left arm got bitten off. The whole book is just saying her story and telling what happened. I loved it so much because Bethany I feel is an inspiration to everyone. After her surgeries all Bethany wanted to do was get back in the water because she never gave up no matter how hard it was. She was always trying to get back up again. She is such a great person and if I could be as much as a hard-working as be like Bethany Hamilton I would!

  50. A book I enjoyed reading this summer was The Unwanteds. The main character is a creative boy named Alex Stowe who lives in a desolate, dull land named Quill where creativity, laughter and even happiness are forbidden. When the day of the Purge came, Alex figures out that he is destined to become an Unwanted and die a cruel and unjust death as did all the Unwanteds before him. But instead, he ends up in a magical world called Artime where all the Unwanteds have been hiding for centuries. Artime allows Alex to be creative and discover the true power of his imagination. Along the way, Alex becomes friends with Lani, Meghan and Samheed and they all play a part in the battle between Quill and Artime, Wanteds and Unwanteds, creative people and those to afraid to show their creativity. Throughout the story, Alex learns the importance of friendship, trust and that creativity isn’t a weakness.
